I'm still learning about cars, so I don't know what is going on here. About directly straight back from the radiator cap in the very back of my engine There is a thing with a couple of plugs. atleast 1 sucks in air (I rigged that, then later got a plug for it, it was shaking the hell out of my car and putting stress on everything) and the other I think are electrical (they are the easiest to acess and have thin wires coming out of them). About 3 times in the last month I have tried to start my car and smoke comes out of the engine, I look at the plugs and usually 1 or 2 of the ones that I think are electrical come off. I plug them back on and everything is fine. I'm trying to figure out why these might be coming off all the time. Please help me out.

Sound like you are talking about your ignition wires. Are their six of them, with three going to one side of the engine and the other three going to the other side? If so first I would make sure that the two that keep on coming off are being conncted to the proper place. Second if they keep on comeing off I would recomend getting a new set of ignition wires.

Also can you give more detail. Were do they go. What do they look like.

Hope this helps
Keith

You hit the nail right on the head about where they were. These ones are in the front furthest to the left. It is the first two. Im sure they are in the right place. It just seems weird that they would be falling off. You said replace them - how much would that cost - if you know?

Another quick fix, while you get this looked in to: Duct Tape "A real man's fix ANYTHING tool."
Good Luck, New wires can be had at AutoZone for like $15 I believe, if you want to add a little power, i have heard that Nology spark wires REALLY help, but i believe they run about $50, but last longer.
There's my $.02 worth....Happy Explorations!

I think what you are talking about is the vaccume (I still can't spell that word) tree. There are a bunch of vacume lines on there. Some of which look like normal vaccume lines and If I remember correctly 3 of them are hard plastic lines with a rubber end on them (to allow them to connect). This tree looking thing is on the back of the motor, driver's side. We kept popping off the lines (one a week) when we started our Explorer. I found that the lines were getting soft from tranny fluid. If you have an Automatic Tranny, you may have a bad vaccume modulator. When the modulator goes bad it normally lets tranny fluid into the vaccume line that runs from the tree to the modulator. Once it gets up to the tree it gets in the other lines and makes them soft. Once I fixed my modulator I cut the end of the lines off the loose ones. The ones with hard vaccume lines seemed to be ok once I switched which connector they were on (they all go to the same place)

I hope your problem is as easy as mine was.

Maniak also maid a good call on what the problem could be. I suggest you goto you local book store and pick up a chilton or haynes book for your vehicle. I there you will be able to find out exactly what is giving you the problem. With out looking at it we can only go by what you tell us. I think by getting one of those books your will learn a lot and be able to figure out what is giving you the problem.

thanks for all the help, I think I'll have to pick up one of those books. I'm new to this - why does everyone always say that's my $.02 worth

I have a 92 Navajo but it's the same manual has your explorer. The vacuum lines your referring to are all connected to one octopus looking thing in your upper intake manifold? right?
If so here's what they are for;
3/8" port on top, (outer, goes to your power brake booster (clamped)
5/15" port on the front, (outer), goes to the speed control
1/4" port on the front, (inner), goes to the Fuel pressure regulator
1/4" port on the back, top, (inner), goes to the Auto. Trans. (vacuum diaphragm)
1/4" port on the back bottom (inner) is for the CCD? (mine has a blue cap on it)
1/4" port on the back top, (outer), is for the air cleaner
1/4 port on the back bottom, (outer) is for the vacuum reservoir/EGR

This is all listed in the Haynes manual for the 91-94 Explorer/Navajo on page 1-14, figure 10.6

Hope this helps,
FM
