How to clear codes?

I replaced my drivers side pre cat O2 sensor, and the check engine light was still on. I disconnected the battery to clear it and it went away. will that do the trick? Also I have a 96 V8 explorer there are no o2 sensors on the exh manifold itself is there? The one I replaced was in the exh pipe right before the first cat
