Polyfill? small enclosure subs?

Does polyfill really make a difference? Here's the problem I'm having my subs sounds like comeplete crap in the new boxes I got for them. I'm pretty sure it's because they're to small, me in my infinite wisdom didn't take the size of them into consideration.. But it doesn't really matter they're in the back of my superduty and there is very little room. Will Polyfill help or should i just buy the right sized boxes? 2nd question is, if polyfill won't work are small enclosure subs any good? what can I expect out of them?

Usually polyfill will trick a sub into thinking it is in a larger enclosure. It all depends on how much the box is out of wack. if the sub requires a 3cf box and they are in a 1cf box. it ain't really going to help. BTW polyfill is less than 5 bucks wouldn't hurt to atleast try.

The polyfill also help stop resence(sp) in the box.

At 5 bucks I'll go pick some up this weekend. Hopefully the crappy car audio place in town sells it. I haven't measure my speaker boxes but they're pretty small. I think my Subs need around 1.24cuft but they don't make them any more so i'm having a hard time getting specs on them.

Don't bother trying to buy it from a car audio place, just go to the fabric store and get it. Will probably be a better price there, and 100% gaurantee it will be there. Same shit that fills quilts and pillows.

It can create some extra heat though, so be careful.

I'll check some fabric stores today. I'm not to worried about the subs overheating, if they do it'll give me an excuse to buy something better. The ones I have now are about 5 years old.

Polyfill is a fix for a improper enclosure design. A proper enclosure doesnt need it. Also if it is properly designed & you add polyfill, it will degrade it's performance.
Also you didnt mention what type of enclosure it was. You donot add polyfill to anything other than sealed.

It's a sealed enclosure and I'm dealing with limited space. I have 2 boxes and theyre in the back of my Super Duty there isnt any room for larger sub boxes.

Doug, with the Pioneer, did you figure out a way to stop the background from reversing?

Walmart has it too, not too expensive. In my experience it will make the sub sound like it plays a bit less peaky, with some lower frequency response picked up. (That's just what it sounds like.. not really what it does I guess)

If you want different subs just look for ones that are specified for the space/box you have. Or go with smaller models, typically smaller subs will need less airspace than their bigger brothers. ie you have 12"s now, stepping down to 10"s ?

No way! thats awsome, thanks.

I was at walmart yesterday, and I found polyfill but it was in sheets. is that the correct stuff to use? I assume I should find some way to attach it to the sides?

Yeah I think im going to have to step down to smaller subs.. I was hoping to save myself a few bucks and use the ones I have and just buy some new boxes. But I've been looking around and I've seen some 10" boxes that would fit nicely. Aah all it takes is money and I'm short on it.

Doug, RE makes some 8"s with a shallow depth that work good in about .5" cubic foot ported boxes...

Decent little buggers that hit low...

Depending on your available cubic footage and mounting depth, you can go bigger. But first, polyfill really does help. Stuff your small box chuck full of it, stuffy stuff stuff and see if it helps. It's not expensive.

I'll go pick some up tomorrow, see if it helps. I have about 15" of depth to work with as far as the box is concerned, I have have to find some boxes that are wider or maybe modify the ones i have. I'll go grab some polyfill tomorrow and see what happens.

If I were you I would get shallow long throw 10" drivers and make a single chamber ported box, as big as you can, and tune it to about 32Hz...

You could probably spend about $300 total and have one awesomely low system without being obnoxiously loud.

Polyfill always has done the trick for me, i have it im my competition subs and they sound great.

use the fluffy kind and it will allow you to put more in, it comes in bags about the size of a party size tortilla chip bag, i used 2 1/2 bags, it depends on your speaker depth though,

dont step down yet you can make it work.
