Tranny problems???????

98 4.0 OHV 5R44/55E.
Left the work last Friday on the way home, would not goin into ovedrive for almost 3 miles.Never did this before.Seems to do this only when cold but it has done it once warm since then.
Also a little further up the road,it developed a shutter/vibration while going up a slight hill, which went away but comes back periodically.
Also seems to shutter/vibrate slightly on acceleration.from time to time.
I benn all up and down the driveline and everything is tight, and yes I checked while vehicle was in neutral so there was no load on the driveline.
I did a search with no real answers.
So is my tranny about to head south??????????

Check the fluid level. Also check the color of the fluid. If it is dark, change it and hope for the best.

Fluid level is right where it needs to be,fluid color is more like a light brown than red,and thats with less than 20k since the last flush. Also there is a black/grey stuff on the sides of,the bottom of the dipstick.

Not a good sign, that means that the fluid is getting overheated and burnt. I would change the fluid right away, but you probably are looking at a rebuild.

Flush and fill it with fresh synthetic fluid and a quart of Lucas ATF treatment and cross your fingers. It'll at least buy you some time.
