OEM Explorer Radio

Hey I'm new here and am the proud owner of a 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer AWD 5.0 V8 from Louisville assembly. I've replaced the stock radio, which is the CD/Tape one from Pioneer I guess made it for Ford. Anyway the lights on the radio have gone out, and I have had to replace the radio for that problem about 3 time. How does it break and is there a way to fix it without spending another $300.00?

Welcome! It sounds like the wiring harness from the vehicle to the stereo (h/u) is not grounded properly.

Welcome, and does that radio have a "CLOCK" button, or an "RDS" button? The Pioneer radios(Mach, Premium), they have the "RDS" button instead of a "CLOCK" button. They all have a display board issue. The answer is to replace the display board, not to re solder apparent bad joints on the old defective board. The board itself is under $25 I have read, but has to be bought several at a time.

There are many repair businesses which regularly fix(replace display board) those for about $60 total. That's the best answer, fix it properly one time, then it won't fail again.

Could that mysterious "illumination" orange wire have anything to do with it?

Radio purchase

Hi guys if I may but in here. I also have a 1998 exp. I have "repaired" the display board about 4 times. Now it will not display. Guess it is now dead. Can anyone point to where I can purchase the display board and another radio. I have 16 days in which to buy so that it can be brought to Belize by a sibling of mine. She has hunted in the Houston area and found none.

Regards

You will have a hard time finding one and having the display repaired, or repair yours. I checked on eBay and there isn't a repair offer there right now. I ran across four new Mach radios, supposedly they have the updated display board, but cost $250+ to get.

I would hunt longer on the internet and find more of the repair places that deal with them. You should find one that has one ready to sell. The guy who did mine a couple of years ago may still do them, but he used to sell them used and repaired for about $175.
Here's his number from then; Dave Miller (616)698-0164, 9-10 EST, in Michigan.

Because of my location I have no choice but to purchase the display card and or the whole radio. I am in Belize Central America. A sibling of mine is coming from Houston so I intend to purchase and have them delivered to her.

I found one in a wreck here with an awesome radio but on finding out that the amplifier is separate the owner is not interested in selling just the part that goes in the dash. A slip of the tongue on my part I guess!!!

Thanks Guys.
Cheers

I thought you might be doing that, needing a radio here to start with. I'd say hunt like I suggested for a repair shop with it in stock. Do be sure of which you need, the subwoofer version is Mach, without the OEM sub it would be a Premium HU.
