Ok I found this POST sounds close to mine. If my 1993 Explorer sits for 4-5 days, it has troubles starting, you dont hear the fuel pump kick on. But once you get it started it stays running (well did). It would decide on its own when it was going to do the no start thing. However it only did not start when I was by myself. If i tried showing someone, it started!

I have done, plugs n wires, fuel filter. It did this before them and still after. Well going down the highway at like 60 mph jus shut off.... stereo, lights, heater was still on, but no gas/motor. Took about 10 mins and then it restarted, going back to drop it off at the house, it did it again, this time, took more like 20 mins to start. Each time you do not hear the whine from the fuel pump. Each time that it has done this there has been different amounts of gas in the tank, first time at 1/8 next at 1/4 then at 1/2 then at 1/4 then at 1/2 now at 3/4! Parked it waiting to hear back from yall. Thanks.

Have you replaced the fuel pump relay yet???

No that I havent done yet, i thought about running dry water and fuel injector cleaner through it a couple times when it does start.

Spend the $20 and get it from Ford. In the mean time, swap the fuel pump relay with one of the others in the power distribution box under the hood. don't bother with additives.

ive heard additives are like snake oil, but wasnt sure, only additives ive really only used is friction mod for the axles, does it have to be from ford or can i just use one of the ones from advance?

Don't swap the fuel pump relay with the PCM relay. They both need to work to activate the FP.

If that's what it is, the original lasted 16yrs. Personally, I bought Ford.

Oh yeah hesitation with the gas pedal, doesn't exactly get up n go when you press it, some hesitation there from sitting still to already going and trying to stomp on it.

I've bought them at Autozone. Just take the old one with you.

random thought as me and wife were talking, this happened before a loooooonnnnnggggg time ago, jus one time, driving at 65mph and boom, stopped, still had heat, lights, raido etc, jus didnt start, had it towed (cost 175) and he dropped it, went out next day, started! then it was battery terminals and a bad ground, well we checked those again, so ive checked and cleaned terminals and all wires.. going out tomorrow to get a relay for it, will drive it for a month locally to see if it does it again and if it does should i guess fuel pump? is that yalls thoughts to?

So did I. Won't do it again for the fuel pump or PCM. You can feel the difference in quality (weight).

Swain, it would be highly doubtful the fuel pump would go bad, maybe the fuel pressure regulator but if you can't hear the pump, it aint runnin, prolly cause it don't have power.

okay so WOW.. yea.. umm... hmmm heres todays problem. Put in the new relay, HA, wouldnt turn it on for like 5 mins, THEN!!!!! went back under the hood, touched the fuse box/relay, TRUCK SHUT OFF and a spark sound was made... shut it all the way off with the key, if ur touching or moving the ***e box under the hood it wont start!!!
