1991-1994 Explorers use coil springs in the front, with a "twin I-Beam" style front suspension. The rear is leaf springs.

1995-2001 Explorers/Mercury Mountaineers have front torsion bars, instead of springs. The rear is still leaf springs.

2002+ have a "coil-over" setup. This combines the coil springs and shocks in one unit.
