I work for The Home Depot...June 1 is my 4 year anniversary there. Before that I was at Sears for a little less than 10 years.
So my opinion is slightly biased....LOL In my particular area (Greater Seattle Area) Home Depot beats out Lowe's in just about every category....but most of it is Lowe's fault. Lowe's moved into the area by buying the #1 Home Improvement store in the NW...Eagle Hardware, which was locally owned and operated. They treated their customers, and their employees like they were their own neighbors....because they were. THEN Lowe's bought them out, and changed the management style, and when they did that, they ran off all of the old timers, and they came to The Home Depot. When Home Base (was Home Club) went out of business, those employees ALSO came to The Home Depot....so we have a MUCH more seasoned work force than the local Lowe's Stores. I know every city is different....but here locally, we are the better option. I have even been 'caught' shopping in the local Lowe's Store if it is for something small....but any purchase over $20, I will drive past 2 other Lowe's Stores...totalling 8 miles...and go to my own store and buy it. If you guys haven't shopped a Home Depot recently, I would recommend you stop back in....you'll like what we've done with the place! After starting my employment carrier at Sears I moved to The Home Depot where I spent several years of what I call hellish pain. The way Home Depot treats their customers in terms of getting them help when the customer needs it and being able to answer questions was just out right pathetic. The reason for the difference between the two Companies isn't that obvious.
I now however work for Lowe's so I will say I am a little biased but I can also offer my personal insight as to why some see a difference between the two companies. It's not just a difference of orange and blue/red. It’s a difference of who the companies mostly cater to. Lowe's caters more to the wife, i.e. the homeowner who is in need of pretty flowers, and maybe a screwdriver and a can of paint. We do special orders and sell appliances just as home depot does however home depot cares less about you as a homeowner and cares more about contractors. Which one do I like better, well it's obvious I really dislike home depot for more reasons than one. Lowe's pays better, treats their customer's better, and down right just feels more like a family than the anti customer company known as The Home Depot.
