Oil labeling

Talked to an employee of Autozone and he was telling me about how he was going to use Mobile1 when changing oil in his HP big block Chevy push rod motor.
I told him about how I use Valvoline Racing oil that has extra additives for flat tapped and push rod engines. He said he "never heard about this".
So he checks on the quart bottle of Valvolene racing oil and it does not say anything about push rod engines.
So next he grabs an empty case and sure enough there is the label.
A few days later he tells me about how he likes to use Mobil 1, so he calls a local Rep and sure enough he tells him not to use the standard Mobil 1 but the bottle that has the crossed racing flags on it.
So today I went back in the store and sure enough, Mobil 1 does have a bottle that has the crossed racing flags where the others do not.
It mentions on the back how it is recommended for HP racing applications.
Even the other employees did not know this or I.
So it looks like I'll be using the Mobil 1 with crossed flags also in my HP push rod motor.
But no time soon cause they just had a sell on the Valvoline racing oil for $2.00/qt. and I stocked up for 4 oil changes.
Just glad that the oil Co's did not forget us guys with the push rod flat tappet engines when they went with the new Federal laws.

That's why they sell zinc-phosporous additives... Google for ZDDP additive.

Personaly I run Rotella 5W40 in my truck and that has the right ammount of zinc.

That's great info you posted. I like the one by Richard Clark and testing different lubrications on the cam lobes.

Now here is a pic showing first hand knowledge of the reduced ZDDP levels in newer oils. This is my 302 push rod motor with with high valve spring pressure.
Notice the first lobe next to the Dist. gear. The left hand side should have a sharper taper at the top of the cam lobe as compared to the cam lobes directly behind it.
All proper break in procedures were followed. I have built more engines then I can ever remember, so I do have knowledge in this dept.
Even to the point of removing the inner valve spring during the initial start up and running Hot water through the block first.
When I called up the man who did the machine work, he stated that there has been a rash of cam failures. lt drove him nuts untill all facts pointed to the lowered Zinc levels.
Then I contacted Comp cams who agreed about the problem and sent me a new cam with instructions to the proper oil and break-in lubricant.

Check out the concave face of the lifter, not good.
I first started noticing the valve lash was changing. At first I thought it was a common problem of the rocker arm nut backing off. But after marking the nut I noticed it was not backing off but the lash was still increasing, again not good.

Here is an additive made by Lucas that I have used along with Comp cams additive.

But main reason for my post is to inform about the Mobil1 oil that has the crossed flag emblem on the qt. bottle and the listing of push rod motors on the case of Valvoline.

And now after a year later I have no noticeable cam lobe or lifter wear
