Alright guys I'm extremely irritated right now I've just spent the last 4hrs working on the X trying to make some simple upgrades to the gauges.

I started off with a set of white face gauge overlays from Ebay and installed them. While I was at it I decided I'd replace the Speedo Cable with This to see if it would solve my jumping speedometer problem. I lubed the cable with the greece provided and routed it exactly like stock.

Now I had a few issues with the overlays and had to take everything back apart to fix them. Then I went on a test drive to check everything and the speedo isn't working. I removed and re-seated the cable at both ends. Still didn't fix it.

So I'm stummped and really need to fix it by tomorrow night as I have to go back to college.

Any thoughts??

This is some extension gizmo, looks like? My speedometer issues have always been getting it fully seated in the speedometer socket. If this thing adds some length, maybe you can temporarily route it where the speedometer end of the gizmo is sticking out where you can see it and tell if it is turning. I'm not exactly sure what this thing is supposed to accomplish.

It is an exact replacement cable. Both ends are just like the stock one just at the speedo head it is all metal instead of the plastic piece like Ford has.

I know it's turning cause I hooked a drill up to the end of the cable and it made the speedo move.

After thinking on it for a while I think I might have a bad VSS it is the only thing original left besides the things inside the T-Case and the speedo head. Opinions on this?

Bump. Need opinions before I tear into it again Cause I don't want to end up pissed and break something else because of it

Have you checked the speedo gear?

Speedo Gear is less than a year old and looks brand new still

Alright Got this problem fixed. I found that the new cable I got was just a touch too short. I replaced it with the original that I knew worked and the speedo still didn't work. Took the replacement cable back and got a new VSS. Put that in and went for a short drive and it still didn't work. Stopped to check stuff out and then started home and it started working again.

I'm guessing it just had to seat itself or something. But all is good and for now the bounce I had in the speedo seems gone. I'll know for sure in a few hrs when I head back to college.

Alright turns out this is not fixed at all. I left for college and for a while the speedo worked fine then all of the sudden it started bouncin like crazy goin from 75 to 55 to 85 to 25 Etc. So I couldn't tell how fast I was going at all.

Once I got in the city it got a bit better cause of the lesser speeds but any time I let off the gas it went straight to 0 and the odometer stopped working.

Now I wouldn't mind so much but I use the odometer to keep track of gas since the gauge doesn't work.

UGH!! All this because I tried to fix a little problem.

So who's got some suggestions? I'm thinkin the speedo head got screwed up or the gear in the T-Case finally went. Any other ideas?

Great you fixed it. How are the white face overlays? Upload a pic? I know how hard it is to get to the back of the cluster. Power to you.

I wouldn't really call it fixed...

Overlays are nice. Pain in the butt gettin in place and wires ran. I'll get one up in my reg soon.

Hope you can get it working.

So are the overlays self powered?

bumpin this as this is drivin me insane

Make sure the cable has a nice flow, no tight bends. Mine bounced for awhile. I just moved the cable a little bit for it not to bind at different spots.

Just an idea.

That's what I'm going to try first along with a little bit more oil to see if that fixes it.

FINALLY FIXED IT!!!!

I'm fairly sure I had a combination of issues that all were resolved today.

First was the vss. I obviously wasn't payin attention when I bolted it in and it was just barely in so it was barely contacting the drive gear in the T-case.
When I pulled it out today I noticed there was no oil on it at all so I oumped a little tranny fluid in the hole to make sure everything was lubed good and bolted it back in tightly.

Next was the cable I checked the routing and all seemed fine not major kinks but I moved a few pieces to be sure.

I then pulled the core out of it and I sprayed the inside of the sleeve with so white lithium grease. I pushed the straw as far down as I could and sprayed till it came back out. Under the car a bunch of old grease was pushed out. I also took the cable part and sprayed it down with the grease then replaced it.

I put the gauges back together and went for a drive and everything is good now. Maybe a little better than before I made this mess. I'll know for-sure Sunday when I go down the interstate.

I have the same problem on my 94 X too. My speedo just bobs up and down from 0-25 mph then from there up it decides. However mines only does it when its cold. If its middle of summer its dead on perfect.
