Spongy Gas acceleration and Transmission not shifting

I have an 03 Ford explorer XLT.Really strange problem but all of a sudden when starting from a stand still the car will tach twice as high if not three times as high before shifting and will not make the final gear shift. As if it is in Overdrive. Also feels like the 4wd is activated as well. When stopped I can put it into neutral and it will rev and stay at about 4000 rpm. When I depress the gas pedal there is no response at first press but when I continue pressing it finally will rev.If you depress the gas fast back and forth there is no revving at all. AND THEN THE wonder of it ALL is after I do this for awhile everything goes away and the car is back to normal.

Any CEL or trouble codes? I had similar issues caused by a faulty throttle position sensor.

So this will affect your auto transmission not shifting correctly or should I say finishing out it's cycle when up to speed. Also could this affect the feeling that the car is in 4WD and the feeling that it is stuck in Overdrive?? Absolutely Amazing! Like I said, if you pump the pedal while the engine is running and try to get the engine to accelerate and reaccelerate , All of the problems .......just go away! I'll see if I can get codes from an Auto Zone.

By far the best approach. Hopefully, AZ can read tranny codes. Good luck.

if there is a harbor freight tools nearby you can get a pretty nice little OBD II scanner for about 60 bucks. pretty good deal, and it will save you future trips to autozone.
