Hi from Pittsburgh

I created this account a long time ago when searching for something, but I'm planning to actually put some work into our 2007 Mercury Mountaineer V8 soon, so I thought I'd properly introduce myself. I'd never really gotten into online forums until I bought my 2011 Elantra this summer and I've been spending a good bit of time at www.elantraclub.com (same username).

Anyway, the Mountaineer is getting to the point that I should consider some maintenance (spark plugs, spark plug wires, maybe other things) so I thought it would be good to get involved in this forum. I've done no mods on the Mountaineer except for installing a new head unit. Not sure if I'll get into modifying the Mountaineer like I have the Elantra but, like I said, it's time to consider some DIY maintenance.

Great Site

Last October I was trying to find out how to repair the heat in my 2003 Explorer. I found this site and learned exactly what was wrong with my heat and the names of all the parts I needed. Love this place.

hi! i am 1zengirl, but you can call me zen. i own a Explorer Sport '99. I bought it used a few years ago, from someone retiring from the military. he told me he did everything imaginable to the vehicle, so I didn't have to worry....and for a long time, that was the case. all i had done, up till last year was change the oil every 3500 miles. then, last year, i needed a clutch. This year, I needed a crank shaft coordinator, or something like that! honestly, I am still in shock from the cost of this THING!!! $512.00 at Aamco. I still don't understand what exactly happened. all i know is this: I went away fro a month, my sister came once a week and started it up for me, yet when I came back home, I got one ride out of it and it refused to start the following day. it had enough fuel and the battery was good, sooooo, what the heck could be wrong???
Aamco put it through the regular computer testing and other tests and were about to charge me for 2 more computer hours, when suddenly, it started....but not until I was informed of their findings and the cost. my family says I am driving a money pit, but, I remind them that it has only had 2 major things wrong with it in the 4 years I have owned it. Has anyone out there had the same problem with theirs? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me if I over paid for this crank shaft thing-y. Bottom line: i love my sport. driving a stick shift is the best! I think i get better mileage, too. thanks, zen

If you brought your Explorer to Autozone, or Checker they would check your computer codes for free. Sounds like you may be describing the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I have seen the part sell for between $40 and $70, but that's before the mark up that a shop will add to the price. I'm not sure how much a shop would charge to replace it.

Rough Rider

I got here most likely the same way a lot of Ford Explorer owners did..... Bought a truck, ran great, next day started smelling funny, burnin gas, running rough, coughin like she had a cold, little backfiring burps, no power, no kick down, hard shifting into gears....I have an Automatic.
Has anyone found out the REAL cause .
Seriously, someone had to find the cure for her common cold & pissed off attitude. (no, not me , my truck!) Shes a beauty. makes me sad shes not feeling good!

I searched for info on the timing chain noise on the 4.0L SOHC engine. I kept getting links to various pages on this site.

I tried replacing the front hydraulic tensioner. It did not solve the problem. When the reverse gear malfunctioned, I ended up replacing the engine and transmission at the same time.

p a t s

I was searching the internet for information on the specific problem below.
I have a 2000 ford explorer XLT it runs and drives reasonable except the PATS (anti theft) system acts up (the system is slow to clear). It takes about (10 seconds) after the key is turned to the ON position for the anti theft light to clear (go out) at this point it is safe to start the vehicle. If an attempt to start the vehicle before the 10sec. (system clear) the PATS system anti theft light flashes rapid and want allow the vehicle to start. At this point I have to wait 15 – 30 minutes before the system resets. I am looking for a quick inexpensive fix or to completely remove or bypass the system completely. Anybody have any information, how about a remote start module?

I searched "sport trac two piece control arm conversion" or something similar, and also some stuff about lifts & tire size, and the best results kept coming from here.

Window sticker?!

There's a window sticker for this group? How/where could I get said sticker? I'd definitely like to rep the group teaching me to build my truck!
