I am looking for one good upgrade to do on my Stock 2003 Eddie Bauer with 175k.

I was told that the answer to my need for speed is a custom tune.

I'm not looking to take my truck to the strip anytime soon but I was curious what sort of gains I can expect from a tune on a bone stock ex?

Well, keep in mind that you get better results with a better platform to work on. Your first upgrade may be to freshen that 175K engine. Then go from there. Just a suggestion...

Auto to manual

I am in the process of installing a 5.0 from an 1997 Explorer in a 1997 Ranger. We want to use a T-5 insyead of the auto. Can you delete the auto along with all emissions ?

I have done many of these swaps. Depending on the processor you have will determine the difficulty of eliminating the trans in the tune. Some are just picky as anything.-j

'00 Explorer 302/4R70W swap into an old Volvo

I am putting a 2000 Explorer 302/4R70W into an '82 Volvo wagon. Found the original engine/transmission in wreaking yard storage with all of the accessories and original PCM with 11k miles according to the records. One of the Explorer/Firestone roll over casualties.

The plan is for a long term daily driver, no aggressive driving, regular gas, best fuel mileage with a 3.31 rear end.

First hill is PATS which I understand can be disabled. Earlier truck PCM of this series ('96 - '97) did not have PATS but it appears that I must retain the '00 PCM because of the 65 psi fuel rail/injector setup.

Then I would like to clean up all the OBDII codes so that the CEL is off and functional for all the codes that are functional. That includes upstream O2 fuel trim sensors but no cats or downstream sensors. The Volvo is registered as a diesel in an area that will never see inspections.

Then I would like a number of little 'tunes' like smooth shifts, couple hundred rpm later up shifts because of the hilly area I live in, etc. Plus all the things that I should ask about but haven't found out about yet.

What'cha think? All that doable?

I don't market "economy tunes" because I simply cannot prove or disprove gains or losses; due to geographical location, driving habits and actual mechanical tune. I have gotten reports of gains but I don't market them.-j

I can testify that the 87 Octane tune of James not only allows me to use regular fuel, the mileage and performance is pretty darn good too.

I read thru 14 pages and I saw 2 posts about the 5.0

James .. I just got my Mac intake .. I want a tune .. Is there a HP difference between getting a 91 octane and 93 octane? .. What's the HP yielding .. 10-15 with either octane ?

Also , would it be wise of me to buy a under drive pulley first than the tune?

I'd like a pulley but I would like to buy a tune first but if I can get an additional gain from having the pulley first and than tuning with it and my intake I'd do that

Unfortunately there isn't an underdrive pulley available for the 5.0 Explorers. As far as the difference between the 91 and 93 tune there may be 3-5 whp difference.-j

cam change

Hey, we are putting a 97 Explorer 5.0 and all its electrics, along with a T5 in a 97 Ranger.
This a work in progress !!! We are getting EXTREMELY close to doing the swap.
We are wanting to change the cam but keep reading that the Explorer computer wont work with a cam change. Can it be tuned to run with a MOTORSPORTS B303 ??
We now have all parts for the swap except a tuner and cam ......... its getting close !

What do you mean by range? I have a ton of 5.0L intakes in stock. This year has been a good one in keeping stock.

Why are you going to put a B303 cam into a Ranger? It is a completely misapplied cam for that combination. At one time the Motorsports cams were good but there are a lot of options now that are better. Please keep in mind that the truck won't be aerodynamic like a Mustang and light either. So you will need to spec a cam which will support torque as well as horsepower.-j

4.0 K code 2003 Explorer Auto with 5r55s

Can my vehicle be programmed with a SCT tuner by Hennessey? I just emailed 'james@hennesseyperformance.com' and got this response? Isn't this thread all about tuning the 4.0?

'Good afternoon and thank you for contacting Hennessey Performance. While we are an authorized SCT Dealer and Tuner, we do not have any items for your particular vehicle. We have only worked on the 2009-2012 Ford Explorers with the 5.4L engines and have no knowledge of the 4.0L motors and how they could be tuned. We thank you for considering us for your tuning needs and hope that should you have another vehicle we work on, you would consider us again. Have a great day and speak to you soon.'

Edit: I just realized I may have contacted the wrong company. I will send an email to customerservice@hensonperformance.com now....

Edit: reached you on the phone this morning; thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
James,

I bought an SCT XCal 3 from you several years ago for my 2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 V6. I've replaced that with a 2008 XLT Ironman 4.6 V8 (I recovered the tune I had loaded in my old truck so the tuner is not locked).

What do I need to do to be able to use my tuner on the new truck? Right now I have no need of tunes, just want to be able to adjust options to correct the speedometer for larger tires when I install them.
