2001 Explorer auto tran issue. NO #4 #5 gear.

I was trade in my F350 for friend's explorer.

Know it had issue with transmission but what funny it only 50K miles on rebuilt transmission. Cost $2200.

When I drove that for work. It go 1-3 gear no problem but above 40 mph it rev higher but won't go #4 or #5. Boss say it was fine when drove on highway 70 mph when he stop and go it gone no #4 or #5.

Engage in Reverse seem to be slower than normal to me. Sound like pressure try build up to engage clutch direct in.

I inspect tran fluid what surprised me it fresh pink no burnt or black. Test on paper towel it good fluid.

No overdrive flash but 10K miles of these issue it start come on flash.

I think engine brake work in 1 gear I am pretty sure.

I talk to Ford's retired engineer name Mark he say 5R55E IS NOTORIOUS for failed valve body and solenoid.

What your suggestion on this? Apart valve body?

What fluid it use Mercon V or Mercon 5 from what I research there too many different fluid type so I wasn't sure what kind transmission in 2001 Explorer.

Sorry for my bad English.

Wrong year. It 1999 Explorer.

Today I went and check codes.
It had codes for transmission.
P0734 4 gear and P0735 5 gear (incorrect gear ratio)

I test drive. If you shift in reverse I think I count up 5 second before it finally roll. I suspect something leak and try built pressure to apply reverse clutch. bad seal on streo piston or valvebody bonded gasket tear.

Engine code if that useful for you.
po455 Evaporative emission control system pressure
po171 system too lean bank 1
po174 system too lean bank 2

The valve body gasket is not bonded in a 1999, unless it was updated. Check the valve body gasket first.
When both engine codes P0171 and P0174 are present, it usually means the intake manifold gaskets are leaking and need replaced. For the P0455 code, check the gas cap, it has to be the original ford cap and turned on tight.

I forgot to list.

I remember it had trans rebuilt I would say 3-4 years ago at 110 or 113K miles. Now it had 163K miles.

I pray it valve body issue since it had engine brake in 1 gear.

I knew it was intake gasket leak it been on for 4 years. If you reset it. It come back on after 300-400 miles of driving. It had miss at idle but no miss if you rev smooth.

Thank I will check gas cap I am pretty sure it broke.

IMHO, jasper is not the holy grail some think it is. Good warranty though, but very expensive.
