96 XLT with what looks to be the Premium radio---AM/FM/Tape/6 CD changer in console (arm rest)..
Radio turned on today and took about 10 seconds before it put out sound. Sound was a little distorted, then no sound at all anymore. Need to get pullers to get radio out tomorrow. Does this radio have the amp in it or somewhere else? The radio tunes to stations and the cd changer changes cds so looks to be only an audio problem. Overhead display went out at the same time. What a coincidence. Fuses are all ok. Any ideas?

Overhead display began to work today. Radio still has no sound. Sometimes clock resets to 1200 and flickers when key is in on position. Is there an internal amp here or one in the cargo area as I have read sometimes? Still haven't gotten a radio removal tool. My coat hangers are too flimsy and don't work.

are you an audio tech? i don't know what you expect to find by removing your radio. it's a big metal box filled with circut boards, little motors and wires. most of us wouldn't have a clue what any of it does. does your truck have a sub woofer in the back? if not you don't have an amp back there either. check ebay for a replacement used radio or just replace it with an aftermarket HU.

Jay even with no subwoofer you still may have an amp in the cargo area.

I got the radio out this AM. Part number F57F-19B165-CG.. Since the most difficult part of the radio seems to be working, the tuner section, I might be able to replace the audio output devices if they are bad. I am in the electronics field and lets see what I can turn up after I get inside. Already looked on ebay and nothing much there.

Found the amp in the back and took it out. Opened the radio HU and did not see anything in there that would drive speakers directly. No power amp chips. What is going on when people bypass the amp in the rear and just jumper wires together? How is the radio driving speakers without the rear amp? I don't see how all four channels in the amp can go out all the same time. Going to try and power up the amp on the bench and see what I can figure out.

I really don't want to replace the stock radio because I have the OEM 6 cd changer with two cassettes and I am happy with the low fi sound of the OEM setup.

Update

Got it all working again, just like new. Took out the amp and found it was working OK. Found that it needed 12v on the mute pin to get it running. Since the HU seemed to be working as far as tuning in stations and changing the CDs, the next step was to get the amp and HU wired up on the bench and see what is going on and why no sound output from the amp. Not all the posts on the radio and amp connector pin outs matched this OEM setup. They got me close enough though. End result was that the HU was not putting out 12v to the mute on the amp (dark blue wire at radio and at amp). It was impossible to figure out why the radio was not generating the 12v mute signal without an electronic schematic of the radio. I poked around in the radio and found a voltage level that came on and off when the volume control/power switch was pushed in and out. Built a circuit to convert that voltage to 12v and ran it to a blue wire out the back of the radio. Hooked it up to the amp and everything was working. Put it all back in the vehicle and all is well. It was a lot more difficult to get the rear panel back in place again than it was to pop it out.

Wow. Good skills, Jay.
