alright i was going to get an k&n air filter for my 91ex
but then somone told me that kkm has a better one so i was wandering which one is cheaper and which one would be most likley available at my shop. one more question, is this easy to install and does it come with instuructions on how to? thanks alot

K&n is cheaper and more likely to be at a local shop kkm works better though and kkm has instructions and is a fairly easy install

One major benefit of the K&N over the KKM is that the K&N is emissions exempt. If your state is tough on inspections, and you ave the KKM, you'd have to remove it every time you go in for the inspection. Besides, you can go into any auto parts store and get K&N stuff. I have the K&N and I love it.

Seems to me this is coming down to convenience vs. performance. I have owned K&N panel filters in the past and have enjoyed them.

I had a drop in K&N filter for my old '91 Explorer, and I think it did its job nicely. I felt a slightly noticable difference, and for the $35 I paid for the filter, and considering the fact that my old truck had 148,000 miles on it at the time, I was happy.
Now I have a 2000 Explorer Limited 5.0L and I recently bought a KKM True-Rev intake. Wow. MUCH better than the K&N drop in. 100 times better. Again, keep in mind I'm talking not only a 2000 with only 22,000 miles but a 5.0L v8. You can hear the air getting sucked into the engine, which is pretty cool, especially when paired with the sound of you 3" Flowmaster exhaust. Another benefit of the KKM is mileage. I suppose the mileage on my old '91 Explorer with the K&N drop in went up a little, but not much. Whereas my new 2000 with the KKM (again keep in mind I also have the 3" Flowmaster exhaust) went from 16.8mpg to 18.6mpg. Needless to say I was very impressed. I went from being able to go around 285 miles or so on a tank of gas to around 320 miles. If you ask me, if I had $100 to spend I'd get a KKM. If I only had $40, I'd wait and save my money until I had enough for the KKM. Not to say that the K&N drop in is a waste of money, but I think the KKM is money better spent. As far as I know the KKM is only available online, but if you're worried about someone stealing your credit card number or something (you shouldn't be, these days sites have plenty of security measures), you don't actually order over the internet anyway. You call them. Very nice friendly people, they're out of Kansas City, so if you live anywhere near Indiana like me, you'll have your package in 2 days UPS Ground. Good luck with your Explorer!

i would rather go with the kkm but this explorer isnt gonna last all that long so i dont really mind cheaper stuff so ill will prolly get the k&n filter |

question for 2k
and i was wonder if you did any other kinds of modifactions to your 91'?
i have a 91' with just around 150,000 miles also I was planning on puting exaust and some kind of intake right now and then in a few months putting on a suspension lift with a little bigger tire, but i don't know if how much life my engine/truck has got left in it. do you know how long explorers tend to last if they are maintained almost regularly? thanks for the help

not sure how much longer your engine will last mines a 94 up to 160 k im planning ahead though went to a salvage yard and got quoted 600$ for a replacement 4.0 ohv.

My '91 had a K&N drop in filter, dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers and Borla intercooled tips, billet grille, eagle rims, BFG radial t/a tires, and a $3000+ stereo.
As far as how long it will last, that depends. If the oil was changed every 3000 or 5000 at the most, and all the fluids were changed every 30,000, it should last a good long while. When I sold mine, which was about 3 or 4 months ago, it had 160,000 miles on it, and the engine was still running just fine, but the tranny was what was giving me troubles. I had it rebuilt the first time right around 140,000 or so, and I think the shop that rebuilt it did a half a$$ed job, because less than a year later, I lost 4th gear completely... yeah that sucks alright. So I took it to a different place (it was origianally rebuilt at a place in Mississippi where I used to live, but now I live in Indiana) and they fixed that problem, so then it had 4th gear, but the tranny as a whole just sucked. I mean maybe it was working the way it was "supposed" to, but I just didn't like it, I never liked that tranny. Also I used Mobil 1 synthetic on my 91 ($5 a bottle is flat out a waste of money) and also that Engine Restore Lubricant. I would have to say that I recommend that stuff. It costs around $10 I think, but I really think its good on older engines. If you're planning on putting a lot of money into your '91, I'd think twice about it. Now I know, I was in your place before and no matter what I say you'll probably spend a ton of money on it anyway, but let me tell you I've been down that road before. Like I said, I put $3000, yes, a 3 with three zeros, into the friggin stereo. Thats ridiculous. Its even more ridiculous to put much money into performance related parts for the most part, because I don't care if you change your oil every 5 miles, its not gonna last forever. My advice is go ahead with either a KKM or K&N, and a reasonably priced exhaust system, I think I spent right around $225 for mine. Thats all I'd do to it. Then save your money and one day sell your 91 and get a newer Explorer with a 5.0L V8....... man....... its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much different than driving my old 4.0L OHV....... man.......... If you like your current Explorer and you are wanting power, you'll love a v8. Or if you are either mechanically inclined or know someone who is, you could drop a 5.0L into your Explorer. I thought about doing that to mine, but for one I work at a Ford dealership so I get great deals on cars, plus I found a perfect 2000 Limited 5.0L that I just loved. Also putting a 5.0L in an early model Explorer isn't a light task. In my opinion, a suspension lift is a big waste of money. If you want bigger tires, I can understand (again I wouldn't put too much money into it) but I'd get a body lift because they're MUCH cheaper, and very easy to install. I know you'll do what you want, and I guess you should, but thats just my advice. chut, keep in mind that the only K&N product available for the 91 is a drop in filter, they do not make a FIPK for the 91. the KKM is a cone filter /w adapter and in my opinion your best option becasue it will allow more airflow into your intake than any drop in filter possibly can. good luck

thanks for the advice. i looked into getting a newer explorer with the V-8 and actually went and test drove one at a local dealership, oh-man, i think it's deffenitly worth swaping my 91' for. i just can't believe the difference between the 4.0 & 5.0 it dosent even feel like the same truck. i have also had a few problems with my transmission in the 91' and think i'll try to find a manual 5 spd if i upgrade newer one.
one other quick question about brakes. I had some problems with my breaks locking up when it's wet outside or sometimes when it's very cold. the breaks have always been somewhat touchy ( i only have to depress my pedal 1/4 of the way to stop quickly) but when it's wet i can just tap the breaks and apply a small amount of pressure and i am slammed to a stop. usually at the last second my wheels will "lock-up" and skid. i have had the break pads and rotars replaced but nothing seems to help.any Ideas? thanks again __________________ 91' XLT no mods....Yet! |

My old '91 did the exact same thing. Any time the roads were wet I had to be EXTREMELY careful and allow plenty of time to stop. The reason is that your early model Explorer does not have 4-Wheel Anti Lock Brakes, instead it has RABS (Rear Anti Lock Brake System), so only your two rear wheels have the anti lock function. Thats why your wheels lock up. Also, not having the added stopping power of rear disc brakes will reduce your stopping power also.

Disconnect the battery to reset the computer, I have heard that this is a common problem that gets taken care of by resetting the vehicles computer.

I've done that twice now and run it for 15-20 minutes after with all accessories off.
I've run about 4 tanks through since then and didn't count the tanks where I let it idle for so long because I don't have any way of telling how much gas is burned while it's idle. Weird. |

good thought, I did that after the first tank of 15mpg. that's when I reset the computer the second time.
Perhaps I aught to reset the computer and then drive it instead of letting it idle. Edit: I just calculated a half tank's economy from yesterday after an oil change and I got 14.5mpg!!!!

Today I raised the air pressure in my tires from 35 to 40psi, although that shouldn't have been the problem as they were at 35 before.
I don't know what to think, I'm gonna take it into the shop and see if maybe I flipped the gulp-fuel-like-crazy switch when I was putting in the kkn... |
