1993 K&N Air Filter?

I'm wondering If I buy a K&N Filter for my car, will it bolt on to the MAF Sensor part like the air box does? Does it have the plate that bolts on? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I want to know to continue research on the intake system.

no.

for the 93, K&N only has a drop in which is a waste of money...trust me, i had one.

what you want is a KKM. its a conical, washable S&b filter (similar to K7N and cleans the same way) with the adapter you will need to bolt it to your MAF.
cost=about 90 bucks, click here

the other option is to get the whole intake from www.ifab.net which replaces the tube from MAF to TB and has the adapter for the cone filter, though i am not 100% that this kit comes with the filter.
cost = about 200 bucks

K&N

I would get the K&N if you happen to be in an emissions area. I know that they pass all that smog stuff and are more commonly known to people. Plus they give you a little sticker to slap under your hood.

buying the adapter is probably the easiest way to go. then pick up a K&N filter to put on it. I made an adapter that is working fine but I have been wanting to rework it to make it look cleaner.

after making one myself though, it is probably more trouble than it is worth for what it sounds like you want.

which one to get???

I'm making a 3" diameter intake out of PVC, I already got the equip and now I have to order the MAF sensor adapter but I don't know which one to get, which one would be best for an intake with a 3" diameter, and with filter would be best to get?

Also heres a question, if i add an adapter to the oil sump hose to make it longer and connect it somewhere else, would it make a difference? What about the two vacuum lines that stick into the air box, could i extend them and move them? would it make a difference? I'll show you guys what i mean with a picture later.

3"

are you making a complete tube to the throttle body?

And if you use 3" PVC you should need a 3 1/2" filter. Just so you know you will probably need to order that in rather than stopping in the ricer section at autozone.

Also K&N makes some different 3 1/2" filters to choose from. I got one that has a 10 degree bend and is offset rather than centered. this helped to keep the filter out of the fuse box. It actually lays really nice in the area where the old flat filter was.

just something to consider when ordering a filter.

one more thing

that 3 1/2" thing only applies if you are making your own filter to MAS adapter rather than buying one

Exclamation Keep all the old parts.

In case new emission laws effect you, you should keep all the old crap so you can slap it back in to pass...

Unhappy nowhere fast?

what i'm trying to ask is what MAF sensor did the 1993 Ford Explorer 4.0 come with, that way I can know which size adapter to get for my car! I worried about ordering the part and then going to bolt it on and not have it work with the original MAF sensor.

what size mm should i get? 65mm? 70/75mm?

in other words what i'm saying is will a 70/75mm adapter work with the stock MAF sensor? will it bolt right on the stock MAF because i'm trying to adapt a Cone filter to the end of the original stock MAF sensor, which size adapters work?

size

i know it is pretty small. Definately not the 70 mm one. I can't tell you or sure if the smaller one is the right size. For some reason I was under the impression that it was even smaller than that.

You know if you are making a complete tube to the throttle body you could probably come up with an adapter yourself as well. Just be creative and make the thing air tight. gasket material is a good thing to use in there.

see thats what i don't understand, if you put an intake in how would you go about connecting it to the stock MAF sensor? Thats why I Figured the adapters would bolt onto the stock size and then the throat/inlet would spread out to the size of an air filter.

For connecting a cone filter to the MAF you would get one of those adapters, or make your own. They say a 3.5" cone will fit on the 70/75mm adapter. If your new tube from the MAF to the TB is too big to fit snugly you can use a rubber/silicone reducer or maybe a coupling if it flexes enough. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...threadid=81609 does this, although the connection to the TB looks a little awkward.

I was going to make my own adapter, bracket, and get a K&N cone. Then I was going to buy the adapter from one of these places. I eventually said screw it and ordered a KKM kit. It arrives next week. I do want to make a heat shield out of aluminum for the cone and maybe make a MAF-TB tube out of ABS though.
