Little muffler behind the muffler
I am assuming that it is a resenator of some sort, so the question is when I get my current factory muffler replaced with which ever brand I go with, should I also have this smaller muffler, resenator type thing removed as well?
Or if anyone knows what it is that would help as well... I have a '02 Explorer Sport... 4x2... 5 speed manual.. |

It just depends on how loud you want it, i removed mine, but I also had a 4 door so I had a few more feet of pipe to muffle the sound.

So the smaller "muffler" that comes after the regular muffler is a muffler?

I had my factory system replaced with cat backs. 2.5" single pipe, swept to the side, with a dual 2.25" in/ single 2.5" out Magnaflow muffler. This setup caused too much resonance for me (b/c the magnaflow is a straight through, low resistance design ~ no chambers or bends) so I had a resonator added later. Took me a little looking to find a shop that was willing to do it, but now its fine. Every now and then when the temp/humidity is right i'll get stuck on the resonant frequency going up a hill but its not near as bad as it used to be.

But the Ford resonator sucks, aftermarket is much better.
This is in contrast to my VW resonator which I kept. __________________ Alec "Dr. Candlepower" Rosenbaum Daily: 2008 JK Gone: EE "Splat", 2003 VW GTI VR6, 85 Bronco project |

you have to get rid of the stock resonator because it is only 2.25". there is no point in doing an aftermarket exhaust if you are going to leave it necked down to a 2.25 single. if its too loud once the exhaust is done, have an aftermarket one put back on.

Figured it was a resenator... now that means I need a whole peice from the cats back... just more money, but I think it will be worth it... get rid of some congestion,,,
