This is a common issue on multiple model years and models the Escape being one of them. This is only on the 4cyl engines with this odd all plastic throttle body. It happens more when it's cold outside or the first 5-10 minutes of your drive in cold weather. While it is not a issue of the plate sticking open it is a matter of no throttle response when you go to pass someone or simple kick up in speed for a lane change. I have driven them when they are like this in years past and its not pleasant and can certainly be dangerous when the car does not respond to driver input.
