Ouray in July

Thursday I decided to try something a little different on my way home, a trip that has been on my wish list for a long time now - Telluride to Moab via backroads - mostly highway but with about 50 miles of dirt mixed in.

I hit the road at 7AM and was in Moab by 11:30.

My first stop was at the Hanging Flumes along the San Miguel river. The bridge I had planned to cross was under construction (complete replacement) so I had to backtrack a few miles and access the dirt road along the canyon.

The hanging Flume was constructed in the 1880s to provide water to some mines. A reconstructed portion hung in the canyon I visited.

Now just past the confluence of the San Miguel and Dolores river the canyon continues. This would come out at LaSal junction just South of Moab. Not in the plans for today but saved for another time!

Turning back I stopped where the San Miguel flows into the Dolores river

Returning back to the pavement and a few miles later I stopped at this rock hut, no idea what it was for

A beautiful drive through the far west end of Colorado

Finally picked up the Castleton Gateway trail that would take me over towards Moab and across the state lines. This is at the start in Gateway, Colorado.

That's all! Once I reached Moab I drove home that afternoon. A great trip!

Wow, it sure is great to see "Dr. Jack" up there. :chug: I'm sure the spirit of Dr. Jack Lobdell was with you the whole way...

Nice pics Brian:chug:

Absolutely! Glad Dr Jack is still being used to get out and explore

Thanks Rick

Glad I was the EF'er ( and a big time new one at the time) to get Jacks's rig and get back on EF trailing. :burnout:

X2 on the pics!!!:biggthump

It was one heck of a trip, Ted!!!!!

3 tires that went bad (separated, but none went flat)

Got to wheel with my two brothers, even tho we found out mountain shelve road trailing is not for Gene, (drop-offs get to him), but he gave it a try. (and he did Imogene)

Was able to meet two other EF'ers there, svo42 and rusty93xlt.

Wheeled with Mike and Brian on Engineer, Cinnamon, and Alpine Loop.

This was a great trip, even if I didnot take my rig. I must say as much as I enyoy my Ex, Genes jeep handled great on the trails. Thanks to Gens trouble with dropoff, I got to drive most of the trails. :D:D

Oh yea, as soon as I got a connection it would break the connection in a few seconds, kinda irritating

In my defense, the hood and windshield was crappy as all get out, (plus I guess I was around Anthony too much in Moab :D)

And Mikes tent stake---:D:D:D

Ah, what the heck.

...Again...Thanks guys for sharing alll these pics with us.

..Are any of you planning another trip this year?

Are any of you planning another trip this year?

Of course. 2 in state trips for me planned in the fall. And there is the always lingering trips I want to do like the Divide Trail through all of Colorado, more of the Dolores Triangle/Moab/Comb Ridge/Valley of the Gods area and the AZ backcountry discovery route. Not looking like I will make yours or Scott's trips this year.

..Hopefully Mike and them will share their future trip plans too..

..Didn't we already do Moab/Comb ridge/Valley of the Gods a couple years back?

..and you know I want in on the Divide trail..:biggthump..How about April 2015?

..Scotts trip is still on although he hasn't posted it on the Forum yet :p: while I'm pretty sure I won't be going to Bodie but may be Heading to Kentucky during the same time frame..

..Plus I may be heading back to Reno for the third time in a quarter right after Kentucky..:banghead:

..Didn't we already do Moab/Comb ridge/Valley of the Gods a couple years back?

Yes but that barely scratched the surface of that area.

..and you know I want in on the Divide trail..:biggthump..How about April 2015?

Wont be open - too much snowpack.

..So when you thinkin..?

...lets get the party started..:bounce:

..you know what...I will be in Utah next month...just saying..

..Hopefully Mike and them will share their future trip plans too..
:D

I got couple of ones, thinking of La Baja in the fall (Oct time frame) since the one a couple years ago fell thru.

And of course, Hidden Falls just a couple hours south of me around Thanksgiving.

..I hope you guys will start planning threads on these trips as you never know who might show up..

..I know there are a lot of members and Moderators who haven't been out in a while and are watching threads looking for a trip to join in on..;)

Guys it was great to meet you! I was with SVO42's group. Maybe next year I'll get on the trail with you guys.

Can't figure out how to edit my profile here but I actually ventured out from NY.

We did Engineer on Thursday I think and I went and did it again solo on Sunday with the trailer.

Friday we ran Black Bear and came back over Imogene. Got a real late start that day so we only got to the top of Imogene right at sunset. Made for some great shots.

Nice shots, Rusty !!!!!

It was great to get to meet you and svo42 and his family and the ones of the jeep group we got to meet. Glad Black Bear was open for ya'll to do. I have to admit I really like what u have done with the trailer for the M151, and the bumper numbers brings back memories. :salute:

I can see why that is your favorite shot!!!!

Glad ya liked it.

Now I just need the matching M151.:D

Best I can tell this trailer was originally with the 10th Mtn out of Ft Drum. Made it a point to stop in at Camp Hale(original home of 10th Mtn) and the 10th Mtn memorial on Tennessee Pass.
