My 17 year old son just handed me the tranny dipstick and top of rusted dipstick tube from my 2000 Explorer XLT. Don't yet know how that happened. Needless to say, I must replace dipstick tube. Nothing about in my Haynes manual. Anyone tell me how to replace it, and where to find the part? Much appreciate reply.

good point. 2000 XLT SOHV 4L engine, automatic transmission. if looking for transmission model, i don't currently know that info. how can i tell tranny model number?

I think you meant SOHC. You have two choices for the V6...SOHC or OHV.

Try eBay or Car-Part.com. Lots of Exploders in the boneyards due to the Cash for Clunkers debacle so you should be able to find something second hand.

Try asking kbabiak who is a vendor here.
He is a dealer of used explorer parts.
send him a pm

Good point. I always forget about him and pedstang.

re: 2000 XLT tranny dipstick tube

thanks for replying. yes, i meant SOHC, and not SOHV. i will try those venders. also, have i provided enough info about the my tranny for any suggestions on how to remove the remainder of the old dipstick tube, and install a new tube? i appreciate your advice.

DIY Transmission dipstick Tube

I went to check my transmission fluid level the other day and pulled out and wiped the dipstick. As I inserted it I happen to see the dipstick as it emerged from the tube down near the manifold. Thats not right.

it was rusted right through. I bent the dipstick a bit to get it to navigate the bend and make its way down into the tranny and found I was low on fluid. Can't add since it all runs out the rust hole onto the ground.

I took a small funnel and a 3/8 inch piece of clear PVC tubing that I snaked down the dipstick tube and got fluid in my tranny. That was the 5 minute get me home fix.

At home I took the dipstick off, which is pretty easy on the 2000 Explorer Eddie bauer 4.0l SOHC 4wd V6. One nut near the manifold and then essentially pull (I went underneath and with some needle nose vise grips I grabbed the tube near the transmission and pushed it out from below after disconnecting it from the bolt up above).

Went to the wrecker to get a replacement. All were rusted beyond use. Went to Ford. $60 and it had to be ordered. Ouch.

So I made one. I used a piece of 1/2 inch EMT metal electrical conduit. Used a tubing bender to make it the same shape. Made sure (IMPORTANT) that the dipstick stuck out the same amount from my home made as the original. Ground the bracket off the old tube and welded it onto my DIY tube and it works great. At the bottom I filed a groove for an O-Ring to seal in the lower tube and I used a large countersink and a file in the top end to taper it inside so the rubber seal on the dipstick would go in. Its a bit small and tight but works great frankly. Pics below.
