2003 Explorer rear end whine

I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer with 140,000 miles. We use it as a "ski car". The whine just became unbearable in the 4 hour drive to Tahoe. Researched the issue and it is the rear end. Apparently Ford changed the rear end midway through the mfg year and the new ones whine.

Local dismantler, Santa Clara Truck Wreckers - Santa Clara, CA, does these all the time. They replace the "newer" rear end with an "older one". It took 2 days and $900 and the whine was gone and hasn't come back at all in the last 2 years. I tried all the other "solutions" like changing out the fluid with a heavier viscosity one, and none work except the complete replacement.
