Loud ticking sound under hood

My 2005 Ford Explorer just hit the 110k mile marker and I am now hearing a constant ticking sound under the hood. My mechanic thinks its the hydraulic valve lifters. When I took it to the Ford dealer they said I had to get a new engine. The cost to get under the hood will be about $600 just to see what the issue is... Should I believe Ford? Or trust my mechanic? I did some research online and the sound is consistent with videos I have seen on YouTube with the hydraulic valve lifters.. Please help!

Welcome! I have no idea myself but you might try posting in the other explorer forums as these ones are fairly quiet compared to them. You might also get burned by a mod for posting in two diff forums. What do I know? You also might try making your own youtube video of the sound so that others can hear it to help diagnose it better.

i would do what the previous post suggested and make a youtube video so others can hear it. ford might be going off the top of their heads and thinking its the timing chain tensioner going bad. if thats the case, then you will be in it deep. good luck!
