Began to notice odd howling and squealing noises on way home last night when turning wheels to far end of turning radius. Service Intelligent 4WD lights came on. Today steering wheel is totally locked up. Ford trying to make me wait until Thursday before they will see it (of course I'll have to get it towed as its not drivable). Anyone have any idea what the issue could be? I see the earlier models of Explorers all had electronic steering issues as well.

They don't build them like the used to.

It's definitely something to do with the power steering (Electronic Assist Steering) or anti theft..

If you put the car in the run position, but don't start it, try turning the wheel, will it move?
Does it wiggle at all? It may be the steering column lock that doesn't allow the wheel to be turned without a key inserted. Or.. if you have push button ignition, without the ignition started. The little motor that controls that may be broken.
