welp...this is my baby. got her in the fall of 2007 as a gift from an elderly woman at my church. she bought it right off the showroom floor when it was brand new, and she kept it in excellent condition. the only real driving she did was to church, grocery store, and to the flower shop (which she put a tarp in the back so no dirt would get in the carpet). when i got her she had a whopping 54k on the odometer! and of course the paint was in scratch less.

just after a fresh coat of black on the grill and the wipers.

Hey - read your registry and love your truck - great job with it!

One Question - Are you running stock exhaust manifolds? I'm approaching the end of a 4.0 ohv build just like yours, same cam, valves, etc. and your exhaust tone is exactly what I was hoping for.

Thanks man! It's been a long project, my valve seals are actually on their way out for some reason...it smokes bad when I start it then stops. But anyway, I'm just running the stock manifolds. I cleaned up the castings tho with a cut off wheel and a flap wheel then painted them black. It sounds great at idle and in higher rpms's but around 2k it sounds kinda ricey which I don't like...been thinkin about trying a super 44.

WOW, its been quite awhile since ive posted anything!
not much has changed with the explorer, the valve guide seals are getting worse and ive just been too lazy to pull the heads and re-do them. but on another note, i aquired a different vehicle for a more daily use.

its a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI -AWD 5 speed Turbo

its my little street dominator that my uncle and i built, not bad for a 2.0L! pushes 20lbs of boost right now, its got street cams that give it a nice lobe when at idle. bigger turbo, and too many mods to list.

You don't have to pull the heads.use compressed air into spark plug hole, done it a bunch of times.those are fun little cars, tho the awd eats a ton of power;)20lbs is ALOT

its been awhile since ive made a post. im sorry/sad to say ive damn near lost interest in my Bruce (my first gen). he still sits here, needing valve guide seals and a new electric radiator fan or mechanical fan swap.

just thought id throw a random update out there.

hes back!

there is hope!
picked up a few good heads from the local salvage yard. lapping the valves right now and hopefully they can go on in the next week or so.

i will be removing the 4.88 gears front and rear in the near future as well and want to replace them with a set of 4.10 gears. anybody willing to trade me???

IMG_6618_zps12daa304.jpg

Crap I would have sold you my new heads. They only have 9k miles on them.

Oh well.

dont tell me that... these were a pain to pull at the salvage yard with august oklahoma temps outside.

IT HAS STARTED!

as some of you may know, i have been having oil consumption issues for the last 10k miles of my engine rebuild. the rebuild only has about 25k on it now.
due to symptoms i determined that my valve guide seals became worn out due to my rocker arms not sitting flush over the valves. long story short here is what i discovered.
IMG_1349_zps58cf7197.jpg

WOW, now the question is, what caused this to happen to every single exhaust valve guide seal??
literally all of them are like this if not worse. all of the intake valves are just fine. now keep in mind, these heads are NOT OEM heads. they are new castings made from a cylinder head company in florida - Odessa cylinder head i believe.

IMG_1343_zps196860dc.jpg
notice the valve guide seal...

IMG_1344_zpsd6766105.jpg
and again here. see how its been smashed? these guide seals are also very brittle.

IMG_1350_zpsc7df1cc4.jpg

also notice the wear spots on the valve stem.

More to come! i havnt left the explorer game just yet.

NO MORE SMOKE!! Gotta love it when things go as planned. First start and she fired right up. Zero problems and no more oil consumption. In the meantime I will be on the hunt for 4.10 or 4.11 gears to swap out. This will be my daily again, now my 1991 turbo awd Talon be the autocross car. Stay tuned.

Check out my Talon run here at the local autocross event. Suspension was stock in this video, it is now on a full set of adjustable coilovers and poly subframe mounts with adjustable tubular control arms.

I like the antenae what kinda bow you shoot ?

If I ever pick up a lift kit I would request your assistance in helping me put it on. I know of 2 available. It just depends on price.

You got it bro. Just let me know a little in advance and I can help out. should just take a day

minor update...
after sitting and being neglected for a few years, i decided to make the old exploder a daily driver again. first i went ahead and tracked down a set of 4.10 gears for the rear end to make it more highway friendly and ended up trading my old 4.88s to the guy who did the work. still looking for a front gear set... rockauto was a dead end, as they did not have reverse cut/rotation gear sets available.
IMG_1908_zpsbjryi8vq.jpg

and here is the badass new rear end and diy diff cover
IMG_1910_zps2rcnxwsv.jpg

although... i now have a very slow leak with this cover, and i believe that it may be cracked between a fin or two. i guess ill see what happens...
