The Little Grill In the Dash

This is driving me nuts. On my 97 there is a small grill just to the right of the radio. It is about 1" wide and 1 1/4" long and is angled towards the passenger. What it's for? Some sort of automatic temperature control sensor?

I think it has something to do with the passengers side EXPLODING BODY MANGLER! (sorry I had a bad experiance with air bags)
 






Ive wondered the same thing what is that thing for?

Someone told me it had to do with the fancu high end climate control systems. It is simply there in other models/
 






That's right. If you have the electronic climate control, then it will have a thermistor behind the grill to sense the internal temperature. It is cheaper for Ford to make one dash rather than two.
 






that's the microphone, so "they" can listen!
 












If you search the boards i remember a thread where someone cut that grille piece out and used it as a pencil holder..go figure
