Broken too

My '02 with 92,000 mi had a broken left rear spring too. Broken in 2 spots at the top, about 2 wraps down & broken in 2 places at the bottom. The right side was OK. I just finished replacing both. Not too big a job.

for all those interested if you are looking for new springs to replace these a topic that we have over on the modified forum might interest u. by contacting coilsprings.com u can get stiffer stronger spring for these vehicle all 4 for about 500$ and it will also give u a slight lift

Me Too!

'02 xlt - broken right side spring. Had both rear springs/shocks replaced. Temp coolant sensor also crapped out -replaced along with thermostat. Cost of all this fun? $1100!!! Very expensive inspection this year.

I'll be under my Exploder at first light tommorow! My wifes 97 escort ad broken rear springs. I replaced those years ago. My extended warranty is up in 2 weeeks. Last week I had them replace the rear diif seal, transfer case seal, and front diff seal. They also replaced the heater box mixer door and actuator. Max air setting was letting in outside air and was also blowing the A/C at my feet. The service writer told me the dash had to come out...Better him then me. I don't know how many hours that took but I cherfully paid my $50 deductible and smiled. Their labor rate is $103 per hour!

I just found both of my rear coil springs were completely rusted through and snapped. 60,000 mi, no towing, no off-road, no heavy loads. I'll add some pictures of them. I filed a complaint here:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/

Also while I was complaining, I also did one for the rear plastic panel as I already had that replaced

I have just found both of my rear coil springs are broken. Mine is a 2002 Explorer with 88,100 miles, i bought it new. so far I have replaced the transmission and the 4x4 converter box. Now can anyone tell me if I can replace the springs with no mechanical experience? seems Like I would jack it up and remove them and replace with new ones. I do not do any off road driving all in town...

forget that! i was looking at maybe gettting a 3rd gen for a daily driver. not anymore.

Other ford explorers

I also had a 1997 Ford explorer, at 75,000 miles I replaced the transmission in that. after I sold it, the guy that bought it said that transmission went out also.
Sorry, this is my last Ford. they are good looking vehicles but bad on quality equipment. here I come Toyota.

The problem is that there is a potential safety hazard doing this job yourself IF you need to use a spring compressor. Not only is using the compressor dangerous if done wrong, but with the springs being broken how would you attach it? If you don't need one, then it's probably not that hard to do. You should note that you can't tighten the suspension pieces without the car's weight on them. You should prob also replace the shocks if you're going to have it apart anyway....

These freaken explorers! Everything breaks

Replacing rear Coil Springs on my 02 Explorer

Ok, Now I am going to have to replace the springs myself. will I need other items that attach to the springs, base etc?, I know I'll need to rent a spring compressor, but I just may go buy one.

Not that easy...

You should have a shop do them for you...

I'd go for a Monroe Quick Strut if they have them for the Explorer. You get the spring and strut already assembled and no need to pay the shop to do anything. Just bolt it in!

I'd keep these springs they are taking out. Couldn't you be in for a refund if they do recall them later? I'd be livid. No excuse for springs to break on a vehicle less than 10 years old.

I have an 02... i took it in for service... both rear springs broken in 2 different places... almost blowing out rear tires... i had NO idea they broke, Had them replaced for 700... after that i did notice a higher/stiffer ride in the rear. They were replaced around 92K

Not very uncommon.

Quite a few vehicles have this issue.. Most of em are fords.

Escorts, Explorers (seems to be 02+'s) and Focus have it happen a bit.

Doesn't bother me much. When/if they go, just means its time to play with the suspension. Parts that break are just begging to be upgraded :D

I'd expect a coil spring to maybe sag over 5 or 6 years but not snap in half.

I think Ford (or whoever is manufacturing them) isnt heat treating them properly and the springs are brittle.

I have a 02 4-door XLT that has broken both rear coils about 1-2 full wraps from the top also!

It has also had the LF and RR wheel bearings go bad.

And the rear axle seal replaced twice.

I'm the orig owner, vehicle has 60k miles and never driven off road.

Talk about a piece of crap.

.

I also have a '02,:

The RR wheel bearing was done last year

I found out tonight that I need to do :

-LF wheel bearing
-RF lower ball joint
-both rear coils are broken
-rear diff seal leaking
-trans seal leaking

It has 102K on it. All around town driving (wifes truck), never used it to tow or 4 wheeling...

I am disapointed :thumbdwn:
