this truck is driving me crazy :-/

1996 explorer xlt control trac 4wd 4.0 v-6, 4R55E tranny. giving me code 0760 shift solenoid c malfunction and after a while, 0761 shift solenoid c performance or stuck off. changed what i thought was the right solenoid, CEL was off for about 15 min, then came back on with same code. after getting it put back together and all set, the truck started to drop below 1 on the rpms and started to "chug", shake, and try to die.

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shift solenoid C valve
- Shift solenoid C valve harness or connectors
- Shift solenoid C valve circuit is open or shorted

I would think that since you just had the pan off to change the solenoid that the first 2 are moot. Since the solenoid is new there is a possibility that the "spool" (for lack of a better term, the piece that the solenoid gores onto) is stuck closed or open. Possibly seafoam and change the fluid and filter again, but first i would check the electrical connections on the outside of the tranny that controls the solenoids.

Good Luck

when he went to put the pan back on, the solenoid popped back out.... could it have popped out again? i just got this truck not too long ago and haven't really been able to drive it. the O/D Off light has been blinking since i got it, then found out that the CEL has been on but the bulb was blown. it seems to shift fine but seems to be a bit sluggish when trying to get up and go. when my dad bought it, he changed the fluid and filter, he said the fluid was disgusting, so i'm guessing the person who had it prior didn't take care of it at all, all fluids and fuel filter were nasty.

It very well may have popped off again. Personally what i would do is run some seafoam in it and the drop the pan and inspect the issue. Then replace with new fluid. See if that does the trick.

The solenoids are held in place by a metal bracket, which is probably broken, in no way should a solenoid have popped off while putting the pan on.
