Towing a 22ft Boat.

Hello,

I know the Max towing capacity for my 2001 5.0 AWD Explorer is just over 6,00lbs.

I plan on buying a 22ft boat, and it's dry weight is 3,500lbs. So after trailer, fluids, cargo, etc, I know I'll be pushing it but within limits. The only thing I have to worry is about I have to drive over the Cascade Mountain Range most of the time to use it (speed limit 70mph with huge inclines for miles.)

I'm looking for real world input, because if I have to save up for a real truck, I will.

The good thing is, you have a full size truck drive line in your explorer. Assuming all is in good shape, and you'll have some sort of brakes on the trailer, you ought to be fine. May not be running 70 at the top of the mountain, but I'd bet it will pull it. Make sure you use a quality hitch!

Yeah thats what I was assuming. It's my first Explorer, and the drivetrain is so far all good to go. The car is just nickel and diming me on random stuff (major sunroof leak, pinion seal leak, pulley/cam position sensor squeak that wont go away, balljoints, heater core going out, etc. lol)

You did forget to take one weight into account.

The weight of the engine.
