Need help (refrigerator tech)

Long story short-

Wife and i came home from the lake this past weekend to find our fridge "not cold enough". I called repairman Tuesday since i had to work, and it would be best if i didnt touch it since i have no idea about fridges. Anyhoo, it was froze up and needed a new heater. New heater installed Tuesday afternoon and it works great. Only problem is, it friggin stinks on the inside now. Smells like burning plastic/tire fire. Is this-

(1) Normal...... needs time to "burn off coating" or whatever and will stop stinking in a week or so

(2) Not normal..... repairman dufus probably left a loose wire laying on heater and now wire insulation is melting every time the heater cycles

(3) Other

Any input is welcome. I can live with it, but wife says she can taste the "smell" in the ice.

If you r says she can taste it in the ice then i would think that something is burning/melting and the fumes are being released into the refrigerator/freezer.
