Transfer case speed Sensor
Question... Being that these things are just magnets.... Can they go bad? Has anyone had to change a speed sonsor on the transfer case without doing the shift motor? Reason being... I am about to swap in a new shift motor and keep the old sensors (which have been cleaned); however, there was some water seepage into the transfer case at one point (which has long been resovled with many frequent fluid flushes). The car is running great without the shift motor installed but I would like to have the option of 4WD again. Shoud I go out and buy brand new sensors and splice them in?
Any help would be appreciated. Joe |

The speed sensor is available at most aut parts stores, Autozone carries them for about $18 I believe.
Did you spend $300 for a new shift motor? OUCH!! Sweet, glad there's a thread about this. I have to replace mine because I have a fluid leak due to the O-Ring flattening completely. I have already bought a new one from Ford ($40 Ouch). Anyways, I need to pull the old one out.
My question is, how hard is it to get the wires out of and into the large black connector? I have pulled it apart but am nervous about pulling the leads out of it since the new leads may be tough to put in. Has anyone done this? How easily do the leads go in or out of the connector? |

You will find with this connector, and in fact with all the Ford connectors on the truck, they come apart quite easily. You see there is a red piece of plastic in the middle of the plug that is responsible for holding all the pins inside in locked position.
With the right tools you can pry the keeper out, then it is just a matter of unlocking each pin and pulling them out. Make sure you note the position of each wire ![]() WHy do you need to pull it apart? I pulled the connector apart and saw the keeper holding the pins. The 3 wires (blue, green, grey) from the sensor go through the plug (unfortunately). So how do I get this keeper thing out? I only have to remove/replace 3 wires, seems like a pain to have to do all the leads.

keeper probably pries out, needlenose might grab it.
I have not taken this plug apart on my truck but I have looked at it enough to know the keeper is in there. On many plugs there is a slot in the side of it that allows you to insert a smallscrewdriver under the keeper and pry it out.
