HORRIBLE MILEAGE. .only 7 mpg on my 5L 96 X!!!

Hey guys,
I just bought a 96 explorer v8 5L, i thought I got a good deal at $5900. . .
Going by my trip odometer and keeping track of how much gas I put in I found that I'm only getting about 7mpg!!
I saw my mechanic today and he told me i need new plugs and wires, but I dont think that alone could be the reason for my gas woes. . I live in St. Maarten, in the caribbean. . gas here runs at about $2.95/gal for regular or between 10 and 20 bucks a day. . . I'm goin broke feeding the thing, help!

thanx

Use the search function, there's a ton of info on this topic, since the X doesn't exactly do well on gas mileage, except for Adlive, who gets 33 mpg. You might need to clean your MAF, plugs/wires, air filter, fuel filter, check your tire pressure, PCV valve, there's a start for u..

Having the 5.0L miss due to a non-firing cylinder (ie. plug, wire, coil pack) will drastically decrease the mpgs. I was down to 8mpg a long time ago because of a bad o2 sensor and a bad coil pack. I'd do all jayhawk's reccommendations just cause you don't know what history the truck has and it'll most likely get you back up to the 15-17mpg area.

Welcome!

I was getting about that before I rebuilt my heads and ignition system. I was only running on 6 or 7 cylinders at a given time.

I would pull the plugs and look for fouling, that should help narrow down which cylinder is not firing. Also do a compression test, before just throwing parts at it. However, if you truck has high miles, O2s and Coil Packs might solve the problem. Both these parts can "partially fail" where they don't preform up to par, yet register fine during diagnostics.

Thanx for the help guys, I did a search before posting, but didnt find anyone with as bad mileage as I have. . I cleaned the MAF a couple days ago, before I checked my mpg and i think it got a little better, it must have been 5mpg before i cleaned it.. I'm gonna get some plus and wires andsee what happens

I'm a member of the sub 10 MPG club in the city!

You'll want to follow what Jayhawk mentioned.

Glad to be of service

I still can't believe the MPG this rig gets when my stang makes almost twice the power all motor and I drive like I'm in a movie car chase 24/7. I still get high teens low 20's with it and it has a 140k shortblock thats had more nitrous through it than a dentist office.

You think thats bad? I was showing homes in the Bountiful/North Salt Lake area that is on the mountain bench. The roads are so steep that after only one day of showing homes which was about 90 miles I had ate a full tank. Climbing the main street my little computer said 3mpg! its so steep it barly stays in 2nd gear at 30mph. I hate how hilly my area is.

heh wow. . lotsa people in the same boat

I just put 20 bucks in mine this afternoon, I'm expecting it to last till tomorrow sometime. . I havent gotten the plugs yet though, I'll try and get them and put em in tomorrow before I put more gas in the thing
. . . also, my thermostat is messin around with me, my temp guage works when it wants to, it usually stays right above C even in real hard driving for long periods of time. . sometimes it'll just sit on C. . I've heard that a bad thermostat could kill gas mileage, could that be a factor?

oh yea when do you your plugs you don't need the 4$ a piece double platium. Just get the single platium ones that are about 2 bux a piece. There really isn't much difference.
