Question Front end clunking when cold in 2wd ok in 4wd

New to the forum and looking to solve a problem. I have a 96 Sport with a front end noise. When the truck is first driven after sitting 12 hours, there is a clunking noise similar to running over bridge expansion joints, while in 2wd. If I turn the switch to 4wd... it goes away. After about 5 miles or so I can switch it back to 2wd and drive forever with no problems. It has a 5 speed and putting the tranny in neutral has no effect, still have the clunking!! Thanks for the help. Roger

Dk Exp 1996 Awd 4x4 Clunking

Help,

I Have A 96 Xlt Awd With 168,000 And It's Clunking When I Stop And Start!! It Will Do It This When I Start Moving From A Traffic Light. It's Rhythmic Sounding, Then It Stops When I Get On The Freeway. It Will Not Do It Sometimes If I Start From A Gentle Stop.....if I Hit The Gas, It Will Clunk At Least Three Or Four Time Before I Get Up To Speed. I Have Had Ball Joints, Breaks And Everything Repaired. The Garage I Took It To Said, It Might Be The Transfer Case!! They Suggested I Take It To A Transmission Garage And Have Them Look At It. Other Than That, It Runs Fine...i Have A 5.0 V8 Engine!! The Tranny Does Not Slip Or Anything Like That....please Help With What It Might Be...thanks!!
