Whats the name of the movie based on his life? John Wayne played Adair I think? Made in the 70's?

I worked for Red putting out a blowout in Texas. Hundreds of guys filling a BIG hole with this star looking stuff and wetting it. A large trench was dug out ahead of it heading towards the fire. Then the trench was dynimited at the end to let this solution flow into the burning hole and put the fire out.
It was a gas rig that blew up. Tons and TONS of steel plus 2 miles of pipe stacked up there was melted in 30 seconds.
I was just passing thru working my way around the country. Interesting work.
I never met him but I saw him. Everyone said that he was the best even back then.
Sad but at least he lived to be 89.
