Multipoint Sequential Gas Injection?

Does anyone know much about these gas systems and how well they work on Explorer's? I don't mean gasoline either, but LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). I am considering converting mine to gas and wanted to find out as much as possible. From what i've found out, these systems are required when the car in question, has a plastic manifold. Explorers have plastic manifolds so obviously this is the system to go for. Sequential is required so that the engine doesn't backfire and blow the manifold to bits.
For one, i'd like to know if anyone actually makes a system for these cars and more importantly, how does the rest of the engine cope with gas. Will the valve seats handle running on gas?
From some searching i've done, it appears that some Explorers came out with factory gas. I wonder what system these cars had?

I know in my area public transportation vehicles, and fleet vehicles for natural gas companies usually have converted their trucks to use natural gas. See if you can talk with someone there. Im sure the natural gas comp. would love to see you convert and give you info. Let me know how you make out.

I've seen kits labeled especially for the Explorer. I looked into it a little bit, as I was considering doing the same thing. The kit I saw was a little pricey at 2000. Motors run well on propane, polute less, generally cost less to run, but I do think they have slightly less power than stock gasoline. They can also run in any angle, even upsidedown

Adam,
I'm in the same place you were in August last year, looking around for answers.
Your valve seats will handle LPG 'cause they are hardened for unleaded.
About the plastic manifold, you can fit a blow off valve or even something as simple as a rubber grommet to releave pressure in the manifold.
It shouldn't be a problem if you start on petrol and switch to LPG.

Anything you have found out about injected gas would be welcome.
Ford brought out dual fuel Falcons that had LPG injection, I wonder that set up can be modified to fit?

I think a person or two in the UK run LPG in their Explorer's. Hopefully one of them will chime in.

Seems to me like a lot of folks in Europe run LPG. The way our fuel prices are going, it may not be long untill we do too!

hey there
well got my 97 explorer converted over to lpg using a multi point sequential injector system by bi gas of belgium,so far so good..running a lil rich at the moment but it takes about 1000 miles for the rig to "bed in" doesent seem to be any huge changes performance wise, hangs in the 5500-6000 rpm area for about 1 second longer than when running with petrol when the gears shift as you get the kickdown but thats manageable..looks like she's doin about 240-60 miles per 55 liters of lpg(got a 70 litre tank and in line with safety regs only fill it to 80%) havent taken it on a big cruise yet but doin a few hundered miles tomorrow with lots of motor way so i'l let ya know how it go.

basically the dude who did the conversion droppe dhte spare wheel out and replaced it with a 70 litre lpg spare whel shaped tank and put the filler in the passenger side rear bumper(sorry..fender,heh heh) got a lil box on the dash with 5 led lights one red 4 green each representing roughly (very roughly if you ask me) a quarter tank as the lights go out well thats self explanatory, when its on the red i got 15ltrs reserve and when it finishes up the lpg it makes a bleepin noise you hit a button to agknowledge it and shazam back to regular petrol with out missing a beat..couldnt be simpler.

as for starting, you just start as normal with petrol then as the engine warms up to 25 ish degrees c i thin,it automatically swithches to lpg and your away..as long as its fitted by an approved installer ythen no adjustments to your insurance.
hope that helps, any q's just ask.
rgds.

just to update, the system is all run in now, been back for tune up and the initial loss of growl has been regeined..no drop in performance at all..on long runs doin 200 miles for every 13 gallons..not brilliant but consider that to fill up 60 litres of fuel costs me 22 quid!! would cost 60 quid if just on petrol now.hope this inspires suome other xplorers to jump on the lpg bus..beleive me you wont be sorry.
peace

I converted my X to run on LPG back in March. It worked out pretty well and I never regretted doing it.

Here are some pics:

I got it installed here in Germany. Its a Lando Renzi Omega system (the best on the market ASAIK) and it was about $2k (installed).

It's hard to tell from the picture, but where are those 6 fuel injection hoses connecting to? They look like they are going onto the manifold. Was the original manifold removed, replaced, or modified? Could this kit be transferred to any 6 cylinder multiport fuel injected vehicle?

The exploders ol system was also a Lando Renzi, not sure what version but i remember the control for gas/nat gas had that name. We couldnt start in natural gas mode but i think that was because there wouldnt be enough air flowing into the intake to take the gas just turning over with the starter.

You might regret it if you have to get the tanks recertified every couple years though im not entirely sure for propane, but also natural gas tanks were extremely heavy.

According to what they said in the other post, they also had to start with regular gasoline, then switch over. When I was experimenting with a home made system, I had to do that too. This one has it's own separate multiport system bypassing the original injectors.

It would be pretty awsome to be able to start up on it, and perhaps convert the vehicle entirely..
