Excellent, I wish I had posted on here before my last trip. It was right after Irene and since it was my first time there I took the recommendations of the rangers in the Atsion office and stuck pretty close to Hampton road. I was told that most of the trails were completely washed out and impassable with trees down all over. Even tho I had a utility winch and a hi-lift I really didn't want to get stuck out there alone.

Do you guys prefer the Atsion or Batsto side?

This is a great list so far, I have a friend with a nice ranger on 33s who may also want to go. I'm guessing everyone has their own recovery gear but I plan to bring a bunch of heavy straps, some good chain, a Hi-lift, a utility winch, and a shovel or 2.

UHHHHHHH

Some of the water crossing in Wharton are HUGE. My advise is to snorkel up. some of them you just can't get the right side high enough... DRAIN PLUGS IN! Wharton is the whole reason I snorkeled my truck. Some of my friends would probably come.

Definitely. My friend lost his '01 sport in a water crossing that wasn't even all that deep because of the stock intake being where it was behind the headlight. With the mutineer we put an open k&n on the end of the stock intake and it's much better. Not as good as a snorkel but it did help. Probably gonna start getting to work on one this weekend.

New silicone on the ignition wires helps and raising the tranny and diff vents is really easy too. And it is sooo worth it

If you're going on the 17th I'm in. Just looking for an easy run though. Its been about a decade since I went wheeling in an exploder and mine is bone stock...

If it's bone stock it might be a good idea to raise up those vent tubes and take off the running boards since they like to get hung up on stuff. A stock explorer with a little prep can do a lot more than what most people expect!

Hmm...i've only been to Wharton twice so i'm not sure where we went last time but from what I remember all the water places had bypass routes and it was a very flat trail, we had a stock 2nd gen that had no problems.

Somewhere near Aunt Jemima hill? I think that's what it was called, not sure which part of the park that was...was still very light though.

I've heard of aunt jemima hill, only been to wharton once so no idea where it is tho. I also remember the main trails that I was on being sandy and flat with the occasional mud or dip with water. I've heard a ton of stories though about all these features spread out across the park like the famous 1/4 mile and places with names like the playground and such.

Yes. Don't event think about coming to Wharton with relocating the vent tubes. Otherwise youll have both murky front and rear diffs.

1/4 mile is off limits per the county. Its classified as an endangered VERNAL POOL. (Google it) Devils play ground is ok, but like I said... holes are REALLY DEEP. Vent tube relocating is a must, and some type of snorkel is required for most of the holes. Some of them have VERY tight cut arounds, some of which explorers won't make it through, as they are made for jeeps.

I wouldn't want to be caught dead in 1/4 mile. I really like dman's snorkel that he did http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=189837 I'm probably gonna start making something similar.

If this would be a fun run like we did in january, except w/o the snow tearing everyones paint a new anus, I might be willing to bring my truck. I'd have a 00 V8, and a 99 V8 limited with the TT/Shackles come along also.

Snow would make things easier to go through back there. Snow packs on sand = FUN.

Haha snow would be cool. Im up for anything, especially that tan/orange mud thats in wharton, i'd like to avoid water that comes up to the bumper as much as possible, but as far as everything else goes I'm way overdue for a stuck.

Right now I have a K & N filter and intake on my rig, so I'm attempting to get snorkeled by then. At the very least, I have a modified air box that pulls air from the rear instead of the front. That should minimize any splashed water from entering. I already extended the diff vents up so I want to get the trans and transfer case vents moved up by then as well. If I get this stuff done I'll feel better about all the rain we've had and any possible flooded trails.

The problem wasn't the snow itself, that was fun, the problem was the snow on top of all the pine trees blocked trails off and turned others into the carwash from hell...
