Thank you, Buddy Holly

I have been having the infamous chirping ( cricket like noise ) from the front of my motor in the area of the serpentine belt and the various pulleys.

I remember reading threads on this board about the noise and the belt and /or the belt tensioner or idler pulley. Anyway I reckon you just get used to certain things ( noises ) and I have not remedied the problem.

This morning while I was watching The Buddy Holly Story on DVD, the “cricket scene” brought back the memory of the noise arising from the front of my motor and made me want to fix it.

I had previously purchased a new serpentine belt, belt tensioner and idler pulley and had them on hand. I removed the old belt, unbolted the tensioner and idler pulley and replaced them with their new counterpart. This procedure took about 10 minutes.

I carefully listened for the cricket upon starting the motor; there was no noise whatsoever.

Upon carefully inspecting these used components, I believe the sound was coming from the idler pulley.

Thank you, Buddy Holly for getting me off my arse and fixing the problem.

I replaced the belt on my 91, and it got rid of my chirping. But that probably had more to do with the fact that it had been soaked in power steering fluid. And just so you don't ask, or think i'm stupid. My power steering pump blew up on me, with no notice of course, and everything in the engine compartment was covered in the fluid. And since I was close to the shop I take it to when I need something big done to it, I just took it there, and had my dad come pick me up. So it didn't get cleaned out for a couple of days, and in the mean time everything absorbed a little of it.

The parts are as follows:

Tensioner $67.36
Idler pulley $32.99
Belt $30.73

These prices are retail at the local Ford dealer.

In my case it was not a whining noise but more like a cricjet.

Sorry, I have no real answer for you.

... the night the music died.

February 3, 1959
In a snow-covered cornfield near Mason City, Iowa, the tour plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) crashed, killing all on board.
