how do i tell if i have the 8.8 rear end in my 2005 ranger.!?!?!?

whats the axle code on your truck?

and msot of the 4.0s had the 8.8 however i beleive they might have a differnt spline count than the explroer

If the rear diff cover looks the same on your ranger as it does on your explorer then you have an 8.8 in it. However it will be 28 spline where the explorer is 31 spline.

I heard the 28 spline axles aren't really that good. I know the 31-spline is preferred, but i thought the 28 would be atleast decent.

The rangers are 28 spline and not 29 spline. And thet are decent. If you are going to be running 35" plus tires and a heavy right foot you probably want to upgrade to a 31 spline axle. I have heard though that you can't put 31 spline axle in a ranger housing because the wheelbearings are to small and wont let the axle pass by when it is that big. I havent researched this that much so I could be wrong. I hope I am as I was planning on eventually upgrading to 31 spline in mine. If not Ill have to find an explorer axle.
