Question

I have a 1993 Explorer XLT, 2WD,4 Door,Automatic, 4.0 V6. I purchased the truck with 48,000 miles on it. I've had this IRRITATING shake/vibration from the start. It starts about 60 mph and goes away by 70 mph. The original tires were all cupped on the inside edge. I replaced the shocks and installed new tires and the shake got better. But within 1 year the new tires were all cupped on the inside edge again! I then bought new goodyear wingfoots and had an alignment done. Next, I had the radial arm bushings replaced. This eliminated most of the shake for a little while but it is getting worse again. I now have 118,000 miles and have shaken and vibrated the whole time. Can anyone help? I'm tired of buying new tires. Someone suggested the U-joints but I am not sure. This truck never goes off road and is mostly highway driven. Thanks for the help.

Do you still have the original shocks? If so, get rid of them and replace them with a good set. If thats not it, check your ball joints in up front. Hope this helps

bcrews,
Ditto on what Mac said about the ball joints! In chapter one of the Haynes manual you will find a procedure for checking the ball joints and wheel beerings. Basically you jack up the front and try to move the wheel from top to bottom, (ball joints) and in and out, (beerings), and also try and move it the same way your steering would move the wheels, this will check your steering components, (make sure your steering wheel is locked for this one). If you notice any movement have someone look at the components while your moving the wheel and you'll be able to tell just whats worn out.
