I've been through it all when it comes to pinging on my 92 XLT. Right off I tried premium gas, helped reduce the pinging. Took it to a mechanic experienced with fuel injectors, computer failed the MAF sensor and then passed it. The mechanic said carbon buildup, use Berryman's B-12 Chemtool fuel system cleaner to clean the injectors and clean out carbon from cylinders. Nope. Also tried cleaning MAF with brake cleaner just in case. Nope. Tried new plugs and wires. Nope. Tried new air filter and fuel filter. Nope. Tried resetting the computer, ie removing battery leads and letting computer start with regular unleaded again. Nope. All I've got left is trying a chip and a K&N filter. Any ideas that might help would be appreciated, I think I've done just about everything with the exception of a $60 fuel injector cleaning.

I had the same problem with my 93. All I did was to replace the intake manifold gaskets and it disappeared. Try retorqueing the intake manifold bolts first. If that does not work check for a vaccum leak.

Got a question for you Northwest Explorer or anybody else who has done this before...
I was told at the garage that I've not only have a leaky valve cover (I already knew that) but that I also have a leaky intake manifold. Now I've changed valve cover gaskets before so I wasn't going to pay them to do those, and I thought that it shouldn't be hard to take care of the intake manifold as well at the same time. So after all that, my question is, how hard is it to replace the intake manifold gasket? And is there something I should pay special attention to while doing this. Or something else I should also do while I've got all this taken apart? Thanks for any help Dan |

changing the intake gasket is not too hard .Just time consuming. Need to make sure you have all the right tools inluding a inch reading torque wrench. Just follow the instuctins step by step in the haynes manual.
While you are at it change the coolant and thermostat because you will be draining the cooling system. You can get the Felpro kit which includes the intake manifold gasket and the upper gaskets also for about 35 dollars.Bring it to your wrench and they will charge you 300-350 dollars to do it.make sure to label all the connections.you will need to loosen the ac compressor and move it out of the way.make sure to get the best silicon sealant while at the store. took me 4 hour to do it. not too hard.nothing to measure just take off and replace and put back together. |
