I have a '96 xlt w/5 speed manual, all stock w/52k miles. About a month ago the "check engine" light came on and the engine was occasionally running uneven at idle....I thought maybe it was a dirty injector. I threw in a can of cleaner and twenty miles later, the "check engine" light was off and the truck was idling just fine.

A month later the "check engine" light is back on and the idle is running rough...Anyone else have a similar problem???? Anyone have an idea what might be causing this??? I'd like to have a general idea of what I'm facing before taking it to the shop......

Any assistance is much appreciated.

Hey butcher,
I was having a similar problem with a rough idle in my 96 XLT auto, although the check engine light never actually came on, it should have. It turns out I had a crack in a hose near the intake manifold. took it to the dealer (I've only had it about 2 months) and they found it in two seconds and replaced it(for free), no problems since.

Don't know if this will help you but thought I would share it with you.
