just replaced 5R55E in 98 x problems

well my idiot friend tryed to do a nuetral drop tues night and toasted the original 150k trans. so yestarday we went and got a used one with 66k for 600 and stayed up till 5am putting it in, when we originally started it it seemed to go into fwd and rev fine but would roll in park but as it warmed up and we got the fluid toped up it had no rev but fwd seem to work, still no park it was so late we said screw it and i took him home. this morning i went out started it and it rev and fwd fine cold check fluid and it was right hight cold. went for a drive and it was fine at 1st but as it warmed up it seemed to not shift normal like delayed shifts and also seemed to slip in OD and maybe 3rd (hard to tell with 5spd) broght it back home rev still work but still no park and i checked the fluid hot and it was about 1/2in above the xxx on the dip stick. would the fluid being stlightly to high cause the slipage also we didnt change the filter because it was so late so im wondering it that could cause this but im really stumped on the no park it just rolls

any suggestion would be great my friend has to go back to college sun and needs the car oh and sorry for the long post but its the best i could describe it

No trans expert, but I seem to remember that Park in an auto trans is really nothing more than a pin (pawl) that fits in a hole and locks the transmission. Sounds like the pawl is broken off. Common problem if someone pops the car into Park while it still has a bit of speed on. I don't think looking at oil levels, etc, is going to address this.

Good luck, and happy Thanksgiving.

well i think your right about the park pawl being broken i dont know what else it could be since i messed with the linkage and it didnt help. hes been driving it around now for about a day and it is working properly except when it warms up it has the imfamous 2nd-3rd slip which after alot of searching appears to be a common problem theres even a TSB for it but i figure theres no piont in trying to fix that if the park pawl is broke

last question is it hard to replace the park pawl, can it be done with the trans still in the car. i figure we could do the TSB and replace the pawl and be done with it because frankly neither me nor the owner want to put another trans in the x but if the park thing isnt fixable we will swap the trans one more time when he comes back for christmas break since it has a 90day warrenty. thanks again

I've never done it, but I think the pawl can be done with the trans in the car. I wouldn't accept the 2nd-3rd gear slip, you should get another transmission from where you got the first one. I just put a new transmission in my '00 for the same reason.

You'll fix both problems at once - hopefully.
