the flashing light is the trans computer telling you of a code that has been thrown. Take it to a shop with OBD diag equipment, they'll let you know whats up.

Well, I see you are from Sweden. So was my grandmother.

Your truck has OnBoard Diagnostics II (OBDII). When the transmission has a problem, it sets a code and starts flashing the light at you. It takes an OBDII code reader for Fords to have the code read. Some European shops that work on U.S. vehicles will have the reader, and some Ford dealers will, but not many.

You did not mention that you were having a problem with your transmission - just the light.

In some cases, if the transmission is working ok (shifting up and down thru the gears like it should, overdrive works ok) and you can't feel any apparent problems, then you need to change the transmission fluid and filter. Doing the required maintenance is important to getting a long life from these transmissions.

If you CAN feel a problem with the transmission, then you will need to get the codes read to see what is happening in the transmission.

An OBDII code reader for Fords can be found on Ebay for about 40.00 U.S. I am sure you could find one on similar European websites.

Hope that helps!

Thank you !
The transmission works fine but i think there is something with the transfer case or loss of vacum in the front axel.
i get no respose from the front wheels
i have searched for OBD readers, but readeres with the US Ford protocol are hard too find at a price suited for my wallet.
I am used work with older cars so that OBD thing are new too me.
"My chevelle 69 does not support OBD"

You front end doesn't use any vacumn for the 4WD system, it is most likely your transfer case shift motor is bad. There are several posts on here how to diagnose it and repair.

You can buy the transfer case motors all day on Ebay for around $100USD.

As for your O/D light flashing- that is transmission related. There are no codes or diagnostic lights for the transfer case on the Ex.

I heared somewhere that the hubs where vacum controled.
I bought a code reader yesterday so i'll wait until i get that and see whats up
but thanks for the reply

The problem solved!
one of the vacum valves placed behind the right headlight had i burned coil.
have'nt yet replaced it but tried to engage the front axel manualy with a vacum pump and then it got activated. :)

A dealer here in sweden told me the same thing about the vacum but it must be a model variation on my explorer 96 there was two valves managing egagement on the front axel it may be its an europeen modell or something
the papers say it's a Dana 35 axel but i don't know

Code reader

Hi, Skitten.

I have the same problem on my 4x4...actually im sick and tired of all problems.
Can you tell me what kind of code reader you got and where you bought it ?.
We do not live far from eachother..maybe you can explain in Swedish how you fixed your problems ?. Problems now on my Explorer 97 V6 4.0 Automatic transmission as follows:

Flashing 4x4 and low lights on dash. Feels like a christmas tree when driving..ha ha)
Overdrive lights on dash.
Rough idle on could start and low 2500rpm to 400rpm. Works fine at normal temp.
Shaking car when turning fast and loss of brakepower when braking suddenly.
Power look at right front works sometimes/not always.
No daylight running lamps auto.
Springs broken at front door handle. (ordered from USA)
Cruise control-broken..Right side.

I have read the entire site and im going to check in to the problems when its getting warmer. I think the people here at this site is doing great trying to solv the problems. I have got many tips and i copy them to a word document and take it with me to the garage.

I read about the high-down idle problem. I had it on my Ford Mustang. The idle problem was most in normal temp. I replaced the TPS and it worked fine.

(One problem found today !. There is a vacuum hose (white) thats in the harness with the green EGR vacuum. It splits and It runs under the battery and lower down. Does anyone know what this vacuum are for ?. I also discovered that my + battery clamp? was very loose and not tighten. The idle is back to normal again and tomorrow im going for a longer run to check that the overdrive lamp doesnt flash). I cant belive that Ford are putting such hard plastic vacuum lines in the car. The green EGR vacuum line broke just only by touching it !. Had to repair it with a small hose. I guess the cold weather makes them hard and they crack easy. On the white vacuum line, the line had brooken just where the connector sits !. BAD !.

Thanks !. Susanne

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

i bought it at http://www.tradervar.com/ but i checked for it before i replied
and they didn't have it anymore
it was an outgoing model called cp9035 and its now replaced with cp9135.
the codereader didn't help me much but i thik that my problem wasn't logged by the transmission computor but in my case it was only the "OD" controllamp that flashed.
i reasently bought my Explorer so i don't know that much about it

feel free to mail in swedish if you like
