Question

Dear Forum Members,
In January this year I purchased a 1998 XLT.Over easter I took it out off roading, nothing too harsh but at one stage I was doing a hill climb, a bit rocky, low 4x4 and in 1st gear. My car started this horrific banging noise that seemed to be coming from either the gear box or diffs. It sounded like it was trying to jump out of gear. I took it to my local ford dealer and they told me that this was normal. They said it was the automatic traction control transfering the power to the wheel with the traction. Is this true??? Are they just telling me stories???
What is your opinion on this?????
