I had been browsing around trying to find out what my next muffler should be. For those of you who may remember, I had a Flowmaster 40 with some crappy mandrel bent pipe on my 1994 Explorer.
I was browsing between here, TRS, and RPS looking for ideas. Enter the IMCO (http://www.grabthepower.com) Extreme series single-chamber muffler. This muffler was getting rave reviews over on the other two forums, especially TRS. Guys were installing them on their Rangers and saying how awesome they sounded; deeper than the Flowmaster 40, much less drone, and less raspy. Of course a single-chambered muffler you would think would be to loud, right? Well, I bit the bullet and searched the web to find the best deal on one of these mufflers. I ordered a single 2.5" in/single 2.5" out for about $53 shipped to me brand new. I set up an appointment with my local guy and then the hard part, waiting.
Well, today was the day. I drove over to Bud's Auto here in Dillon, MT and talked to Bud himself and told him exactly what I wanted which was to have the muffler welded up with mandrel bent 2.25" pipe to the bumper where I wanted the end of the tailpipe cut at a 45* angle (no tip for me). He was telling me that the IMCO single chamber might not sound to good since its a V6 and be pretty loud as well. Well, I remembered what the guys on TRS had said and bit the bullet again and told him to do it up.
Let me say one thing, these guys do AWESOME work. They took the time to do what it was I wanted and for them to weld everything up and bend up a 2.25" mandrel bent pipe they charged me only $75. A slammin deal for the quality of work they did.
Now what everyone wants to know: how does it sound?
SWEET!! Very deep at idle and through the RPM's. Bud started it up after he was done and looked at me and smiled and said "That sounds pretty damn good!" Sounds as close to a V8 as your gonna get without the added cylinders. The muffler drones a little bit at like 1800 RPM's and that is it. On the highway all you hear is the exhaust grumbling behind you, no drone at all. My Flowmaster 40 I had on my old truck droned like an old school teacher, but not the IMCO Extreme. I smile everytime I start it up. Nice and deep and throaty, not raspy at all. I am not sure how loud it is on the outside while driving, but it is not intrusive at all inside. I would HIGHLY recommend this muffler to those of you out there that want a nice deep sound from your truck. The sound quality is soooooo much better than the Flowmaster IMO.
I will try to snap pics of the setup soon and post them up here.
