I had been browsing around trying to find out what my next muffler should be. For those of you who may remember, I had a Flowmaster 40 with some crappy mandrel bent pipe on my 1994 Explorer.

I was browsing between here, TRS, and RPS looking for ideas. Enter the IMCO (http://www.grabthepower.com) Extreme series single-chamber muffler. This muffler was getting rave reviews over on the other two forums, especially TRS. Guys were installing them on their Rangers and saying how awesome they sounded; deeper than the Flowmaster 40, much less drone, and less raspy. Of course a single-chambered muffler you would think would be to loud, right? Well, I bit the bullet and searched the web to find the best deal on one of these mufflers. I ordered a single 2.5" in/single 2.5" out for about $53 shipped to me brand new. I set up an appointment with my local guy and then the hard part, waiting.

Well, today was the day. I drove over to Bud's Auto here in Dillon, MT and talked to Bud himself and told him exactly what I wanted which was to have the muffler welded up with mandrel bent 2.25" pipe to the bumper where I wanted the end of the tailpipe cut at a 45* angle (no tip for me). He was telling me that the IMCO single chamber might not sound to good since its a V6 and be pretty loud as well. Well, I remembered what the guys on TRS had said and bit the bullet again and told him to do it up.

Let me say one thing, these guys do AWESOME work. They took the time to do what it was I wanted and for them to weld everything up and bend up a 2.25" mandrel bent pipe they charged me only $75. A slammin deal for the quality of work they did.

Now what everyone wants to know: how does it sound?

SWEET!! Very deep at idle and through the RPM's. Bud started it up after he was done and looked at me and smiled and said "That sounds pretty damn good!" Sounds as close to a V8 as your gonna get without the added cylinders. The muffler drones a little bit at like 1800 RPM's and that is it. On the highway all you hear is the exhaust grumbling behind you, no drone at all. My Flowmaster 40 I had on my old truck droned like an old school teacher, but not the IMCO Extreme. I smile everytime I start it up. Nice and deep and throaty, not raspy at all. I am not sure how loud it is on the outside while driving, but it is not intrusive at all inside. I would HIGHLY recommend this muffler to those of you out there that want a nice deep sound from your truck. The sound quality is soooooo much better than the Flowmaster IMO.

I will try to snap pics of the setup soon and post them up here.

hmm. and i JUST got my 40 series welded in.. might have to switch ;)

If you can post some sound clips. I had the MAC cat-back it was just to dam loud in the cab. I was afraid of my 3 yr old loosing her hearing...LMAO... So I have reverted back to the stock exhaust :thumbdwn:

i went back to stock too..and i'm interested in doing somthing else. i've heard alot about these mufflers. your review made them sound better and better..hmmm lol

interesting...i would like to hear a sound clip as well

I don't have work tomorrow, so pics should come tomorrow, unless I forget of course. I will try to borrow a mic so that I can make a sound clip for you guys.

As far as MPG, haven't driven enough miles to really tell. As far as seat-of-pants gain, I would say there definitly is some. My fiance also said that she said she felt some butt-dyno gain. I have no actual dyno results to post, just going on feeling (here at 5200 ft elev. I was FINALLY able to spin the tires today).

The sound is sooooo nice, I started it up this morning just to here it idle (my finace thinks I am crazy :D ). Again, very little resonance. I have yet to hear what it sounds like from the outside while it is being driven, perhaps I will have a chance to hear it tomorrow and report back.

I got my muffler from http://hileri.com/?pageid=50844 They also sell Flowmaster and Magnaflow. I would highly recommend this company. They shipped very quickly and had great, personal customer service as well as the best price online.

Any more questions, just ask. I am more than happy to help.

PS: The stock piping on my 96 was 2". I am glad I went with 2.25", seems to be perfect for the OHV, you SOHC guys would probably be best off with 2.5"

I hope you are right. i am a flowmaster fan but havent had my explorer long and havent tried one on a v-6 yet. I just ordered the 2.5 inch single in/single out. they are really short! only 12 inches by 9 3/4. that should save some space. thanks for the report. :D

I don't think you will be disappointed. I also noticed no low end tourque loss, felt more of a gain all around.

Hey..I'm new round here and have been lookin into exhaust..I am considering the MAC. Besides being loud as hell...How does it sound?

VERYYYY interesting...I also saw some posts about these mufflers and I was really interested in them. I have dual 50 series flows rite now and wanted somethin louder and deeper...maybe Ill do tru duals with a H pipe with these (Right now I have a dual in/dual out muffler)

7425

That style muffler has the dual in 2.25" with the single 2.5" out..this might be the best bet since SOHC engines have dual pipes comin from the heads to the muffler

Actually, the 7425 muffler is a single 2.5" in/dual 2.25" out. The way that the muffler is designed, I would NOT recommend running it backwards.

Got to hear what it sounds like form the outside today while its being driven. O man, it sounds soooooooo nice! Way better than my flowmaster did on my 94, not raspy at all, just nice and deep through the RPm's.

Search the forum, this thread is about my IMCO muffler. Please do not hijack.

quit hoggin' all the sound, let us hear it! lol

Soon as I can get a mic to record with, I will post sound. For now, its all mine :D

dang its 2.5" in? that sux...I was about to get excited and order one to replace my 50 series flowie...Might have to do the Y pipe 2.25 to 2.5 in then 2.5 out. I read I would gain my low end back goin from dual 2.25 to single 2.5" Get a sound clip man I wanna see if its worth me buying it! Any pics of the install ?

Must have noise...
i called imco and they recomended an elite series 2.25" dual in and 3" dual out, reduced to 2.5 from the muffler back for my demands (a little rumble, not obnoxious, and no sacrifice in low end performance), i wanna hear what yours is like before i dive in.

C'mon man everyone needs to hear this muffler. Sounds like it would be what everyone wants if it sounds that good. Don't leave us hangin.

Sorry, gonna have to leave you hangin. The muffler is on my ex-fiance's explorer. No soundclips are going to be had.
