'05 Explorer Tranny r Engine Problem?
2005 Explorer with 21,000 miles. Running down the highway at 75 MPH with cruise all of a sudden it felt like the tranmsssion dropped into neutral. Did this twice in a row within a few seconds and then it was fine. Drove another 300 miles after the incident with no problems. I do not have the engagement issues that plagued the ealrier 3rd gens and up until this point the vehicle has been trouble free. Anyone heard of this? I would take it to the dealer but I didn't get a blinking OD light nor did I get a MIL so I am unsure if the dealer could do anything about it. Thanks for your help.

A very curious symptom. Classically sounds like a sudden loss of pressure....like low fluid.. or an electrical glitch to the Electronic Pressure Contol Solenoid. I'm not gonna be much help on this one. (I'm not as smart as some believe) But am standing by very interested in WHAT could produce that driveability symptom.

it should be under warranty still, get to the dealer and take someone for a ride, if it pops up make them fix it. if tis 4x4 maybe the transfer case is somehow going to nuetral for some unknown reason. try putting it through the gears manualy, and see if everything is fine there, like first gear engine braking, etc...

Maybe the digital range transmission sensor (DTR) is a little out of alignment.

Sometimes, a code could get stored in the computer without displaying a CEL. Hook up a scanner to it, and see if you could pull any codes.

Thanks for the replies. After we got home from the trip I did a few hard launches to see if there was any slipage and there was none. I am unsure if it was transmission disengagement or engine miss...but with the sound it made I think transmission.

Update:
The following weekend we made another trip about 500 miles round trip and it did it a total of 6 times throughout the whole trip. 4 of which were while going up grade and 2 of which were going downgrade. It is at the dealership right now but I am afraid they won;t be able to recreate the situation and won;t find anything wrong. Anyone know of a good "personal use" code scanner that will give you real time readings so I can monitor any missfires that may occur while on a trip? Thanks. |
