What can I use to clean them that won't harm anything inside if it got in? While I've got both out I want to clean them all up from the trans fluid/mud/grease/etc that's been on there forever.

I wrap the TRS in saran wrap, and stay away from the input area and output shaft exit area (this is on a trans disconnected from a TC, if they are connected you can work in the output area fine as can be.)

I spray it with engine degreaser (GUNK foamy brite is one I use often), and 30 mins or so later hit it with the pressure washer hooked up to HOT water. Sometimes I will max out my Hot water heater temp for a short while to be sure the water is REAL hot (then turn it back down when I am done).

On real bad trannies it may need to be done twice, several days apart. They usually come out pretty clean.

Hope this helps. If you do not have a pressure washer a hose hooked up to your hot water heater will do fine... but you ain't gonna be using your finger to make the spray, get a nozzle!

ps. Your 93 won't have a TRS. Only 4R/5R and 4R70W have them.

Okay, thanks. I've got a pressure washer so I'll give that a try in a bit. I'm guessing I need to cover up the opening for the shifter, as well as input and outputs, electrical connections, etc?

Cover the overflow output on the top rear, back of 4X4 housing that goes onto the transfer case, part that the filler tube goes onto, inside of the bell housing where the torque converter meshes with the front pump, the side where the neutral safety switch, 3 prong solenoid plug, shifter linkage, and the opening of the modulator where the vacuum line connects onto.

Between BB's good advice and your obvious common sense you will be fine.
