HF Code Reader?

It will probably work for basic OBD codes, but not for anything else.

I saw in another thread that some people had Ford proprietary codes that didn't come up with it. Scanners have more functions, but then you get what you pay for.

Yup.
That will give you some numbers and then you have to look the numbers up. It might have the ability to clear too, but that does not solve, nor diagnose any problems.

That said the price is about right for such a simple basic tool. Realsie though it will not yield any tremndous results

For about $50+ shipping you might be able to get a Actron 9135 on e-bay.

i would check out advance auto parts, i work there and i know that we carry a bunch of different scanners and pretty decent prices, plus u can get a nice decription of what each different scanner will do
