Well Men -- The KKM INtake Results are In

My 4.6L XLT city- 90% city driving -never got more than 11 MPG -- Now I've had the "DYNOMITE KKM INTAKE" on it for 4 Days -- AND -- My Mileage went to 9.6 on the dash -- And also There's something wrong with my Right foot -- Great improvement as far as performance and SOUND I just can't help but get into it -- Shocked a later model Jeep V8 last night -- At the next light the guy hollers - Yo Buddy "What's in that thing" BIG SMILE KKM INtake and a Ford Engine
Have fun Boys and don't bitch about the mileage - The newness will wear off and then we'll see about mileage. Gas prices are falling anyway Thanx WARREN from (KKM) Great Product

Durnit....I can't wait to get one of those bad boys in my truck. I'm just glad I got the towing package with the different gear ratio....makes the V6 feel a little bit better. lol

The KKM intake should put me at right where I want to be as far as perceived throttle response

FJB, you can increase power and decrease fuel consumption when you decide for the XCal-II. I´m running the XCal together with the KKM, and even my right foot is a little "disadjusted" since the KKM is put in - my mileage is 13 mpg city-use-only and 15.5 mpg in average. Not bad for the V8, and I run it 75 % city , 15 % road way and 10 % highway. And most fun is to get rid of the speed-limitter, not to bite the steering at 100 mph

Does the XCal require premium fuel?

If so, the fuel economy would have to increase by 10% just to break even.

I was thinking about a tune, but then realized I might have to give up the 87 octane to get it.

Don´t worry - the XCal comes with three tunes : one performance-tune for using regular fuel, one for Premium-Fuel torque-optimized and one for premium fuel performance-optimized. So you can choose the fuel and tune you wanna use. There´s no need for premium, I´m running my 2006 V8 with regular 8 - 9 mo´s - only in summertime I use the premium-fuel-tunes. And fuel economy is very close to regular. My V8 takes0.5 to 0.8 litres more on 100 km´s when I´m running premium-tunes, but the way I drive is a bit different in this case, too

And you can choose the way they programm the XCal for you - was important to me because in GE we have other fuel quality than in the states ( up to 100 octanes )

Interesting!! I will be towing with the EX, so I might like that torque tune.

Just curious, what sort of liters/KM are you seeing with yours?

In the cold weather here in Maine, I have been averaging about 18 MPG (13.07 liters/100KM), unless I am in the city where things are just bad (14-15 MPG), however today was warm (37 degrees) and I was averaging around 22 MPG on the way in to work. I am hopeful to average 20 or so this spring and summer.

Short-distance and city-use my V8 runs between 14.7 - 13.8 mpg (16 - 17 l / 100 km ), highway use at 90 mph average is 19 - 16.8 mpg ( 12 - 14 l / 100 km ).

Best was 20.4 mpg, but long distance trip ( 310 mls ) and cruise-control fixed at 75 mls.

All w/ regular - performance - tune and KKM-Intake

WOW! That is real good! You must have picked up mucho HP with just a KKM.
I never heard of that much HP gain from just a KKM. Would you have been able to beat that Jeep V8 without the KKM?

I have been driving with mine for serveral weeks and noticed a 1 MPG improvement in mostly city driving, but I drive like a soccer mom. Has anyone else noticed an MPG improvement?

I dont really "feel" any difference with my KKM on... it certainly is louder though at full throttle, which is kinda what I was going for. My milage is pretty erratic to really tell though. So far I am trending a bit better than normal though. If anything though, I can't imagine gaining any more than a few hp or so from this. The stock airbox is HUGE.

With the KKM and Magnaflow exhaust i picked up about 2-3 mpg over stock. But when i loaded the tune file with the Xcal 2 i lost that gain because I'm having to much fun with the throttle.

Hello all, I've been contemplating an upgrade to the intake and after a quick check of all the manufactures....would seem the choices are still limited to KKM or just an OEM air filter upgrade (such as K&N). Would worries me about the KKM is it sucking in the engine heat instead of fresh air. I've read KKM's website about their choice to not use a "cold air" style, but wonder if this assumed you were going down the road at a decent speed vs in city stop and go. I understand that increased power isn't a huge concern during city traffic....but I don't like the idea of hot air being sucked down my new engine.

So I took a look at the OEM airbox inside and out.....I honestly think it is pretty good as far as OEM goes....that thing is huge! It also has a nice cold air intake tube. My first inclination is to cut a large section of the tube off of the part inside the box in order to get better direct flow.

The part of the intake that I really would like to replace is the actual tube going from the filter to the throttle body.....gotta love that pinched part towards the bend.

I suppose my bottom line is.....has anyone seen a real dyno chart for KKM vs OEM vs just new OEM filter? (yes, I’ve seen KKM’s posted numbers via a customer). Great to hear seat of the pants feedback...but the dyno tells the truth and isn't influenced by the mean sound of a open intake. Also, has anyone bought or constructed a heat shield (I’ve seen the generic ones posted on ebay)....especially one that still utilizes the OEM cold air intake tube?

Thanks!

Well I had not heard back from anyone on my quest for dyno data so placed a call to Doug at Bamachips. It was my first dealing with him and I was very impressed with his knowledge....not to mention a hell of a nice guy. I don’t usually like quoting people but I took pretty good notes and thought you should hear his thoughts.

I plan on buying the xcal2 soon and had some questions regarding the tuning map. I'm no tuning expert but have “boiled water” during the tuning (dynojet dyno tuning a PCIII or wideband module) for my performance oriented motorcycles and cars.

1st, given that I had a TCM and PCM reflash (TSB 06-23-11), how would the Bamachips tune not overwrite the updates. Doug said that I would buy the xcal2 and download the current settings from my truck....then email the file to him for tweaking Perfect!

2nd, I mentioned to him that I was considering an aftermarket open intake and curious if he had any new 3V 4.6 X's on his dyno with such mods.....and how would his tunes work with them. He has not seen or tested the 3V aftermarket open intakes and said that the best he could do was estimate the needed A/F mixture change....but he didn't recommend making blind tweaks in this manner as it would be impossible to get an optimized mixture (thus chancing a dangerous lean mixture or dumping extra fuel to compensate). I was glad to hear that Doug was not a "it's close enough" type guy....because I know I'm not.

I also asked about not having an open intake heat shield (and thus losing the cold air aspect). Without "bashing" certain manufacturers, he was against non-shielded open intakes and recommended just adding a drop-in aftermarket fabric filter for my application if no other styles were available. He also said he could make much smaller/safer A/F map tweaks for a drop-in style.

Recommendations from one of the country's top Ford tuners is enough for me....For now I'll just be adding a better filter and having Doug add his map tweaks. I know many of you have more elaborate intake mods and are happy with the results but for the time being I’m going to stick to a conservative approach unless I decide to pay for a dyno-tune in the future (or find someone with a good map for the same truck, module flashes, and mods). Would love to hear about any else’s dyno experience or how their A/F maps were tweaked to properly compensate for an open intake.

cheers
