Jon.... GET YOUR BABY TUNED....GET YOUR BABY TUNED....get your baby tuned.... I swear I almost want to just send you a brand new Xcal2 with a tune for your truck for free, just so that you have that darn thing tuned! Sell plasma, donate sperm (no, not to the wife or babysitter ), sit on a corner and collect change in a tin cup but get that puppy tuned bro. If you do not do this within one month James or I will be forced to slam your junk in the toilet lid.

Good luck buddy.

I think it would ping hard at WOT

this engine has not seen that yet.
There is a 61 percent throttle stop.
even floored, that is being babied!!

Yes I forgot that, how much trouble was that to do? I could not have driven it for as long as you have without hitting it. I run my vehicles through all throttle ranges almost every time I drive. Regards,

Me too, that's why it is there-
I could make it open up, by adjusting the throttle cable bracket.

I have to ask the inevitable question, although I'm surprised that I didn't see it asked already... What would you say the cost of the engine parts set you back? If I were to hazard a guess, I'd put it around 5k withOUT the cost of setting it up thrown in?

You inspire me, you evil monkey

Hehe don't feel bad. There is always someone with worse affliction. Last I counted 5 months back I passed $25k just under the hood in total. That number should stay put for a while until winter when H/C's see their way in. $30k in parts alone by next summer is a good possibility.

10k is not small chunk of change for a N/A setup though! Jesus! Of course, I know some of the special things you have in your truck that would probably tend to raise the price a little. billet *****....

I caught the "B" word a few times when I was reading his parts list. 'B'='E', as in extra expensive, lol. But it's all worth it in the end, right? At least that's what I keep telling my wallet, anyway It's difficult for a novice to figure out what engine parts you can leave stock and still have minimal chance of breakage, and which ones should definitely be replaced with stronger material. Have I mentioned how glad I am that you guys write such detailed build ups?

New to the site

Hello all i am new to this site and i must say it is very nice. Jon your truck is awesome. Thats exactly what i want to do to my 97 EB awd hence the name. I was told that using any cam other than stock will upset the explorers computer. Is this true? did you have any major problems using the cam that you did. I hope to have this all up and running by summer 08. I am sure i will have more questions. Thanks to all for any input Happy New Year

The Explorer PCM is very adaptable-however there is the rev limiter.

My truck is running "fine" on the stock tune-to a point. The stock tune will not keep up with the fuel demands at WOT. I have all the gadgets to finally tune mine right-but I have more pressing issues on front burners right now.

I suggest you contact James Henson (jah81592) at

There are several reasons
1 clearance issues with the oil pan and sump-
2 the deck height wouldn't fit
3 Dis ignition would require a custom cam sensor , oil pump drive unit

And it goes on--

Oic

Makes sense to me... Not to mention the whole computer controlled engine thing might be a bit of a bottleneck! Perhaps someday my 5.0 will be as cool as your, someday, maybe, if I am lucky.

BTW, I got an estimate for the 28oz. balancer to have a crank trigger, and a 94/95 pulley. How's $320 sound, it's more than I was hoping for. The balancer is the typical 79+ Ford piece, obviously the labor is the catch. Who wants an under drive crank pulley now? Don't even ask what the blower pulley costs. Regards,
